Mary Davies

1831-1858

 

Mary Cooke was born c1831 in Woking, she was baptised on the 29th August 1831 at St Peter’s Church Woking Surrey and was the daughter of William and Mary Cooke (nee Smither) who married in Horsell Surrey on the 25th August 1829. Her father William was a Blacksmith.

Mary’s siblings were:
William bapt 1st April 1832   Elizabeth bapt 23rd March 1834   Sarah bapt 1st Nov 1835   Edward born 10th June, bapt 15th July 1838 (all baptised in Woking) and   Emma bapt 6th March 1842 (baptised in Reigate)

In 1841 Mary (10) was living in Mill Street Reigate Surrey with her parents William (35) and Mary (30) and her brothers William (8) and Edward (2).

Mary married James Jeremiah Davies (a China & Glass Dealer) in 1848 in Oxfordshire and they had the following children (all born in Newbury):

James William 1849   Philip Edward 1852    McFarlan 1855    Mary Elizabeth 1857

In 1851 James, Mary and their son James William were living at 41 Northbrook Street Newbury

Mary died aged 27 on the 23rd February 1858 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st March 1858. Her son James William died aged 8, a few weeks after his mother and was buried on the 20th March 1858 in the Newtown Road Cemetery.

Mary’s husband remarried in 1859, his 2nd wife was Mary Hannah Waite and they had the following children:

James Waite 1860    William Henry 1862    Walter John 1864    Herbert 1866    Annie 1870

The family were living at 63 Northbrook Street by 1861 where James had established a successful earthenware and china business.

James Jeremiah Davies died aged 79 on the 7th June 1901 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th June 1901.
