Elizabeth Abel

Elizabeth Marshman was born in Berkshire c1793 she was the daughter of Stephen & Priscilla Marshman (nee Salter) who were married in Thatcham in 1771. Elizabeth married Samuel Gough in 1814.

Elizabeth’s husband Samuel died aged 43 in 1836 and was buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 16th August. Elizabeth remarried the following year her 2nd husband was Robert Abel.

The 1841 census records Robert and Elizabeth’s surname as Habel, they were living in Old Newtown Road Newbury and Robert was recorded as an Army Pensioner, also living with them was Elizabeth’s son, James Gough aged 20, occupation, Corn Porter’s Labourer.
Elizabeth’s husband Robert died in 1844 and was buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 6th April.
The 1851 census records Elizabeth as a Laundress, living with her married daughter Sarah Langton and her family in Stroud Green Newbury. The 1871 census records her as a Charwoman lodging at a Public House in The City Newbury.
Elizabeth died aged 84 in 1873 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th September.
