Harriet Draper
1823-1904
Harriet Messenger was baptised on the 21st September 1823 at St Mary the Virgin Speen Berkshire. At the time of her baptism the family were living in Shaw. She was the daughter of Charles & Mary Messenger (nee Liddiard) who were married on the 20th May 1815 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1841 the family were living in Woodspeen and Harriet’s father was an Innkeeper
Harriet married Jesse Draper (a Sadler and Harness Maker) in 1849 in Newbury and they had the following children:

Harriet also gave birth to 3 stillborn children who were buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the following dates: 29th August 1857, 12th October 1858 and 30th November 1859
In 1851 Jesse, Harriet and their daughter Jane were living in Pleasant Place Newbury. By 1861 the family had moved to Purdue’s Yard (off Bartholomew Street) and by 1871 they were living in Cheap Street Newbury.
Harriet was widowed in 1871 her husband Jesse died aged 46 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September 1871.
After her husband’s death Harriet worked as a Monthly Nurse. In 1881 she was living in Waldegrave Place Newbury but by 1891 she had moved to 1 St Mary’s Almshouses Cheap Street Newbury where she continued to live until her death in 1904 at the age of 80. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th February 1904
