James Thorn  (1813-1890)

James was the son of Edmund and Elizabeth Thorn born in 1813.

On 1815 census the  family were living at Clark’s Buildings, west of Bartholomew Street, Edmund was a shoemaker (Cordwainer) the profession that James went into.

James married Maria Dibley 29 July 1835. On 1841 census they were living on Greenham Street, Thatcham with three children Edwin b 1836, Henry b 1838 and Alfred b 1840 and one servant.

By 1851 they living on Bartholomew Street, Edwin and Alfred not recorded ? died or had left home although only 15 and 11yrs’ . Henry was a shoemaker’s apprentice there were two more children Catherine b 1844 and Charles b 1848. Also living with them was James‘ widowed Mother-in-law Rachel        Dibley.

1861 and 1871 censuses have only Charles living at home, on Bartholomew Street. They still have one servant.

1881 shows them living at 128 and 129 Bartholomew Street. Charles is still living at home and is now a Boot Maker assistant. There is still one servant.

James is a Boot Maker He employed 10 men, 5 women and 1 boy and died 1890 and is buried in UPG at NRC. He was a Baptist.
