Elizabeth Sangwell (1836 – 1903)

                                  

Elizabeth Sandford was born circa 1836 in Woolhampton, daughter of John & Hannah Sandford. John Sandford had married Hannah Sheail on 3 January 1828 at St Stephen in Baughurst.

 

In the 1841 census Jane was recorded with her parents & siblings in Shafford Lane in Woolhampton. In the 1851 census Elizabeth was recorded with her father & two siblings in Woolhampton. Her occupation was recorded as a servant of all work. Elizabeth was living with her parents & sister Mary in Tadley, she had no occupation recorded.

 

Elizabeth married Joel Sangwell on 15 November 1863 at St Peter in Brimpton. She was recorded as a spinster aged 27 living in Woolhampton with no occupation & father John. Joel was a bachelor aged 37 and a labourer.

 

In the 1871 census Joel & Elizabeth with two children, Edward aged two & Sarah aged three months, were living in Beenham with Joel recorded as an agricultural labourer. Joel & Elizabeth were living in Carbins Wood Lane in Bucklebury with children Edward, Sarah & Rose (aged seven) in the 1881 census, Joel was still an agricultural labourer. In the 1891 census Joel & Elizabeth with all three children were living in Woohampton, close to The Rising Sun pub. Joel was recorded as a farm labourer, Edward was an under game-keeper & Sarah and Rose were both domestic servants.

 

Joel died January 1892 and was buried 26 January 1892 at St Peter in Woolhampton.

 

In the 1901 census Elizabeth was living with her son Edward Joel & his family in Woolhampton. Edward was an under game-keeper.

 

Elizabeth died 12 April 1903 at the Union Workhouse in Newbury and was buried 16 April at Newtown Road Cemetery.
