George Lambert (1833 – 1905)

 George was born circa 1833 the son of Joseph & Mary Ann (nee Chalk) Lampard. He was baptized as George Lampard on 29 December 1833 at St Mary in Thatcham.

In the 1841 census George was recorded with his parents & siblings living in Woolhampton. In the 1851 census he was recorded as a visitor in Whistley Green near Wokingham & his occupation was an agricultural labourer. His birthplace was recorded as Woolhampton.

George subsequently joined the Army. He is recorded in the 1861 British Army Index in Malta as a private in 2^nd battalion of 15^th foot & in 1871 in Gibraltar as a gunner in 15^th brigade. He is also recorded in the 1871 census in the Fort Regent barracks in St Helier in Jersey & recorded as a private born in Newbury. He was recorded as George Lampard in the army records.

George was recorded in the 1881 census with his parents in Woolhampton & his occupation was an agricultural labourer. His birthplace was recorded as Newbury.

In the 1891 & 1901 censuses George was recorded in the Union Workhouse in Newbury as a pauper with an occupation of general labourer. His birthplace was recorded as Woolhampton in 1891 & Speen in 1901. He was recorded as George Lambert in both censuses.

It can be seen from the census details that the details of his birthplace are not consistent. It appears from his baptism that he was born before his parents moved to Woolhampton, which seems to be circa 1836 after the birth of his brother Joseph (in 1834) & before the birth of his sister Hannah (in 1838). He was probably born in Newbury & quite possibly in Speen as recorded in the 1891 census. His brother Joseph also had various birthplaces recorded in the censuses including Newbury, Shaw & Speenhamland.

George died November 1905 at the Union Workhouse in Newbury & was buried 17 November 1905 at Newtown Road Cemetery. He did not marry.

George’s parents are also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, his mother Mary on 9 May 1889 & his father Joseph on 27 September 1889. They were both buried under the surname Lambert as well.
