ELIZABETH HALL

Henry Copas and Eleanor Allen Payne                                                 (position of graves not known)

Henry 1844-1923 was the seventh child of James and Mary, nee Witts. He married Eleanor Allen Payne in 1870. He was a Carpenter and Chair manufacturer in Newbury, Berkshire.

Henry was born in 1844 and died on 29th. May, 1923 while living at 3 Upper Raymonds Almshouses, Newbury.

Eleanor was born on 8th. July, 1847 and died on 11th. January, 1900 while living at 28 West Street, Newbury. Her father, Benjamin Payne 1805-1887, came from Henley-on-Thames. He married Harriet Allen, 1804-1858, in Thatcham, Berkshire in 1833. He was a Chairmaker and Turner. They had five children. In 1851 they were living at Mills Yard, Newbury, Berkshire. He was living with Eleanor and family at Greenham Wharf when he died.

 

Henry and Eleanor had five children –

Kate 1871-1907, who married Arthur Hall in 1904. He was the youngest son of Nathaniel Hall, an Ironmoulder, and Adelaide Grist. He became a Carpenter. Kate died in Newbury Union Workhouse and it is noted that her burial was arranged by friends.  At the time her husband was resident in York Road. (Maybe she was sent to the workhouse if they could not care for her.)  His brother, Walter Nathaniel Hall, was a Carpenter and Joiner. He married Elizabeth Knight, born in Gloucestershire, and they had six children. Their family home was Adelaide Villa, 127 Boundary Road, Newbury. Their daughter, Lily, married Herbert Camp of Camp Hopson.

Henry (Harry) “Willie” 1873-1942 was a House Painter. He married Elizabeth Ann Green in 1902, in Pontypool, Wales. They had two children – Henry George, 1903-1997 who married Beatrice Minnie Dolley in 1930 and William Llewellyn, 1905-1975 who married Edna Rose Green in 1934.

Rose 1875-1958. She lived in Greenham and Midgham, Berkshire and was a Dressmaker.

Edward 1877-1878.

Lillian “Lily” 1879-1948, who married Reginald G. Legg in 1905. He was a Sign writer. They lived in Newbury, Berkshire and had six children.

 

These people are buried in Newtown Road Cemetery.
