Always known as Joe, he was born in London and came to Newbury at an early age and spent his life here. He had many jobs but was best known at the time of his death for his role at the Cattle Market, where he assisted the auctioneers by labelling cattle, driving them to the station, or help in loading transport.

Very much an animal lover he kept two donkeys, Flying Fox and Polly. He also had two ponies. He used to take these animals to outdoor gatherings to provide rides for the children.{link to obit Cattle market Joe}
