George Chivers ( 1868-1935) George was the fifth child of George (1830-1903) and Elizabeth (1833-1910).Other siblings were ere Alfred, William, Emily, Frank, Eliza, Mary Ann and Henry J. They were living in Shaw lane (1871), West Mills (1881) He enlisted into the army . Date of attestation 18th January 1887 into the 3rd Royal Berkshire Regiment. Army number 2005. On record described as 18yr old, a baker 5ft 5 1/2 ins. Tall, chest 32 ins., complexion-sallow, eyes- blue, hair-light brown, C of E. He was promoted to corporal in June 1887. Left the army in Feb. 1891, discharge by purchase – bought himself out. He had married Elizabeth Lipcombe in 1889. On the 1891 census they were lodging in Hassell’s Buildings, Oxford Road with George’s Uncle William Mudge, a cab driver. They had a son George W aged 1 yr. and George senior was a baker By 1901 they were living at 3 Compton Cottages .George was now a journeyman baker. They had five children George W 11, Gertrude 9, Frank 6, John 4 and Margaret 1. Gertrude was Frances Berry’s mother. In 1911 They were in larger accommodation in Pembroke Road where George had a bakery. On census he is described as a bread maker and confectioner maker. Children living at home were Frank 17, working in The Mill, John 14 errand boy in the business, Margaret 11, and Florence 9 George’s elder brother William married Rebecca Lipscomb ( Elizabeth’s sister)and then went to Canada. George died in 1935 still living in Pembroke Road. George and Elizabeth lost three children, Eliza and Emily in 1871 and Frank in 1912 Elizabeth (Eliza) and George were Frances Berry’s Grandparents and Gertrude her Mother Ref.
