Henry Elton

He was born c. 1832 in Newbury.  The 1841 census records that, aged 9, he has entered into the harsh conditions of  the Newbury Union Workhouse together with his father William Elton, aged 45, a Pauper and Carpenter,  and his siblings Arabella (age 15), Will (age 12) and Emma (age 9). Research has failed to find his home in 1851 and 1861. In the 1871 census he is an Ostler at the Royal Exchange Inn, Bartholomew Street, working for the Licensed Victualler John Hunt. He died in August 1873 aged 43 years and he was buried on 29 August 1873.

His father William Elton died aged 77 years and was buried in the cemetery on 20 April 1871. His sister Arabella Elton was in domestic service for over 30 years in the household of  Israel and Maria Toombs.
