John William Tomlinson Leathwait

He was born c. 1791 in Stepney, Middx.  He was the son of  John Thomas Leathwait and Elizabeth Ann Scheck (a widow). His father was a Citizen and Grocer of The Royal Exchange, Cornhill, City of London.  In 1807 he was apprenticed to his father for 7 years. Electoral Registers show that in 1834 he had a house in Aldermanbury;  in 1835 a shop at South Front, Royal Exchange, Cornhill; and in 1855, under the heading of Grocers he is based  at Clapham Rise, opposite the Bedford Arms.

His occupations were variously Bookseller, News Agent and Grocer.

Records show that he and Hannah had 7 children: John Richard born 24/8/1813; Hannah born 21/10/1814; Thomas born 11/1/1816; Elizabeth born 5/5/1817 who married Joseph Frederick Hickman of Newbury as his third wife; Mary born 21/7/1820; Ann born 21/10/1821 and Sophia born 14/4/1824 who married Thomas Simmons of Newbury.

In 1851,  aged 59, he is  living at 23 Canterbury Terrace, Newington, London, with his wife Hannah, daughters Elizabeth, Sophia and Mary, and one domestic servant, Elizabeth Williams.

He died on 19 October 1860, Newbury, aged 69 years.  Probate was granted  to George Adey of Newbury, Builder, and to his nephew John Edward Simmons, News Agent,  of Pope’s-Head-Alley, Cornhill, City of London (from Tax Records this is the same address as his grandfather John Thomas Leathwait who paid £2 10s in 1857).

The gravestone inscription includes his name together with that of his wife Hannah and their daughters Mary Leathwait and Elizabeth Hickman (nee Leathwait).
