Thomas White

Thomas, his parents and siblings:
Thomas was baptised on the 11th August 1793, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Isaac and Sarah White (nee Bailey) who were married on the 11th July 1773, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
Thomas’ father Isaac was baptised on the 13th December 1751, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of John and Mary White (nee Rasben) who were married on the 23rd December 1750, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Isaac died aged 74, in 1827, he was buried on the 5th January, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Thomas’ mother Sarah was born c1749. (Possible baptism: 3rd December 1751, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Baily). Sarah died aged 70, in 1819, she was buried on the 5th November, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1815 census of Newbury records Thomas (21) was living in White’s Yard, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his father Isaac (62), a Tailor, his mother Sarah (63), his sister Ann (26), his brother James (25) and his niece Ellen (10).
Thomas in later life:
By 1814 Thomas was in a relationship with Mary Johnson. Mary gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Sarah Ann who was baptised on the 23rd October 1814, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, as Sarah Ann White, illegitimate daughter of Thomas White, Cabinet Maker, Northbrook Street, Newbury, mother Mary Johnson.
Thomas and Mary were married on the 31st July 1816, at St Luke, Old Street, Finsbury, London.
(Mary Johnson was born on the 21st September 1792, she was baptised on the 14th October 1792, in Midgham, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Patience Johnson (nee Hutchins) who were married on the 11th April 1784, in Overton Hampshire)

In 1841 Thomas (45), a Cabinet Maker, was recorded living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with his children, Henry (15), a Tailor’s Apprentice, Emily (15), Thomas (14), George (12) and Mary (10). Mary (45), a Charwoman and Ellen (15), a Seamstress, were also living in Northbrook Street but not in the same household.
In 1851 Thomas (51), a Cabinet Maker, Mary (52) and their daughter Mary (19), a Dressmaker, were recorded living at 8 Winchcombe Place, Newbury.
On the 25th September 1854, Thomas, an old and highly respectable tradesman of the town was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse.
The 1861 census records Thomas (67) and Mary (67) living at 11, Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury
Thomas and Mary were again recorded living in Raymond’s Almshouses in 1871.
Thomas died aged 83, on the 4th July 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th July.
Mary died aged 86, on the 26th December 1877, in the Newbury Workhouse. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December.
