Ellen Rozier 1822 – 1921 Bur 3/6/1921 (Simon Brown's notes)
Ellen White m Thomas Rosier a policeman. Their son Stephen Rozier was born 4th of August 1866 at Hazel’s yard just off Bartholomew Street Newbury.
1881 census shows Stephen, aged 14, an errand boy living with his widowed mother Ellen Rosier and sisters Amelia and Jemima
In later life she lived at St Bartholomews Almshouses
Died aged 99

Ellen, her parents, siblings and early life:
Ellen was baptised on the 9th June 1822, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas (a Cabinet Maker) and Mary White (nee Johnson) who were married on the 31st July 1816, at St Luke, Old Street, Finsbury, London.
Ellen’s mother Mary Johnson and her twin brother Joseph were born on the 21st September 1792, they were baptised on the 14th October 1792, in Midgham, Berkshire, the children of James and Patience Johnson (nee Hutchins) who were married on the 11th April 1784, in Overton, Hampshire. Mary died aged 86, on the 26th December 1877, in the Newbury Workhouse. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December.
Ellen’s father Thomas White was baptised on the 11th August 1793, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Isaac and Sarah White (nee Bailey) who were married on the 11th July 1773, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Thomas died aged 83, on the 4th July 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th July.
The 1815 census of Newbury records Ellen’s father Thomas (21), living in White’s Yard, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his father Isaac (62), a Tailor, his mother Sarah (63), his sister Ann (26), his brother James (25) and his niece Ellen (10). Ellen’s mother Mary (22) and her daughter Sarah Ann Johnson**** (born c1814), were recorded living in Perris’s Yard on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with a Thomas Palmer (39), his wife Mary (35) and their children, Thomas (10) and Elizabeth (6).
****Sarah Ann Johnson was baptised on the 23rd October 1814, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the illegitimate daughter of Thomas White (a Cabinet Maker) and Mary Johnson.
Thomas and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury
George Henry, 22nd December 1816 (died aged 4, buried 22nd December 1820, at St Nicolas)
Charles Edgar, 17th January 1819
Henry, 7th February 1821 (dad recorded as a Cabinet Maker on all baptism records)
Emily, 26th September 1824
Thomas, 21st December 1826
George, 5th July 1829
John, 10th June 1835 (died aged 16 months, buried 8th January 1836, at St Nicolas)
Mary, born c1831 (no baptism found)
In 1841 Thomas (45), a Cabinet Maker, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with his children, Henry (15), a Tailor’s Apprentice, Emily (15), Thomas (14), Goerge (12) and Mary (10). Mary (45), a Charwoman and Ellen (15), a Seamstress, were also living in Northbrook Street but not in the same household.

Ellen married Thomas Rosier, in 1842 (marriage registered in the December quarter, in Newbury)

Twins: Samuel and Stephen, 1866 (Samuel died soon after birth, buried in the NRC on the 20th November 1866).
Jemima, 1868
The 1851 census records Thomas (24) as a Bricklayer, living in Elkins Yard, with Ellen (26) and their children, Jeremiah (7), Thomas (6) and Charlotte (4).
In 1861 Thomas (37), now a Policeman, was living in Hazell’s Yard, Newbury, with Ellen (38), Thomas (16), a General Labourer, Charlotte (15), Ellen (8), Sarah (6), Matthew (5), Harriet (3) and Joshua (5 months).
The 1871 census records Thomas (46) back working as a Bricklayer. He was living at 5, Lewis’ Buildings, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Ellen (48), Sarah (17), a Domestic Servant, Matthew (14), a White Smith, Amelia (7), Stephen (4) and Jemima (2).
Ellen was widowed in 1872. Thomas died aged 48, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th May.
The 1881 census records Ellen (57), a Needlewoman, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her children, Amelia (17), a Seamstress Machinist, Stephen (14), an Errand Boy and Jemima (12).
In 1891 Ellen (69) a Tailoress, was living in Pound Street, Newbury, with her married daughter Jemima Jenkins (22), a Dressmaker, her son-in-law, John Jenkins (23), a Hairdresser and her grandson, George Jenkins (1).
In 1891 and 1895 Ellen applied for a Raymond’s Almshouse. On both occasions someone else was awarded these vacant almshouses. She was eventually allocated a Bartholomew’s Almshouse, in July 1896.
In 1901 Ellen (79) was living alone at 7, Bartholomew’s Almshouses, Newbury. She continued to live at 7 Bartholomew’s Almshouses until her death in 1921, She died aged 99, and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd June.
