Frederick William Stratton
c1866-1910
Frederick William, born c1866, in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised 1st April 1866, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of David and Mary Ann Stratton (nee Mountford) who were married on the 27th June 1857, in Ecchinswell, Hampshire.
His father David was baptised on the 2nd April 1829, in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the son of Richard (a Labourer) and Mary Stratton, of Ecchinswell. Richard Stratton and Mary Cooper were married on the 30th September 1826, at Deane, Southhampton.
His mother Mary Ann was baptised on the 13th February 1831, (surname mistakenly recorded as Mumford) at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, the daughter of William and Sarah Mountford (nee Dore) who were married on the 27th May 1824, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.
David and Mary Ann also had the following two children:
Fanny, born c1859, baptised on the 20th March 1859, in Ecchinswell
Sarah Cecil, born c1864, in Speen, baptised 1st May 1864 at St Nicolas, Newbury
The 1871 census records David (41), a Labourer (as Daniel), Mary (40), Fanny (12), Sarah (7) (as Sara C.) and Frederick (5) (as Frederek Wm), living in Newbury. (Surname recorded as Shatton, in familysearch.org)
Frederick’s mother Mary Ann died aged 39 in 1871. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.
The 1881 census records David (52), as a Sawyer, living at 8, Prince’s Place, Newbury, Berkshire, with his daughter Sarah (17) and his son Frederick (15), a Printer’s Apprentice.
The 1891 census records Frederick (25) as a Printer & Compositor, lodging at 6 Cox Street, Coventry, Warwickshire.
The 1891 census records Frederick’s father David (61), a General Labourer, living in Fore Street, Honiton, Devon with his “widowed” daughter Fanny Mount (32) a Dressmaker and his granddaughter Lizzie Mount (8).
(In 1881 Fanny (22) was working as a Domestic Servant at Burghclere Farm House, Burghclere, Hampshire. Also recorded on the census was Algernon C. Talbot (22). On the 7th December 1882, Fanny gave birth to a daughter, Lizzie, in Charlestown, Cornwall. Lizzie’s birth was registered as Lizzie Stratton in the March quarter 1883, in St Austell, no mother’s maiden name recorded. Lizzie was baptised on the 3rd August 1883, at Holy Trinity, Chelsea, Middlesex. Both single parents named on the baptism record. This couple didn’t marry. Algernon Talbot married someone else in 1886. In 1891 Fanny and her daughter Lizzie are recorded with the surname Mount. No marriage found! Fanny Stratton died aged 33, in 1892, in Devon)
David died aged 67 on the 11th January 1897. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th January.
The 1901 census records Frederick (35) as a Printer’s Machinist, living at 5, Burton Terrace, Newbury. His sister Sarah Cecil (35) was recorded living with him. (Surname recorded as Skatton in ancestry)
Frederick William died aged 44, on the 13th May 1910, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th May. Abode at time of death, Oxford Street, Newbury.
The 1911 census records Sarah Cecil (47) as a self-employed Dressmaker, living alone at Sunnyside, Oxford Road, Newbury.
In 1921 Sarah Cecil (57) was working as a Domestic Cook, for a Mr. A. Sanderson, at The Stag Cottage, Bagnor, Berkshire.
Sarah Cecil Stratton (recorded as Sarah Cecily) died aged 65, on the 1st June 1929. She was laid to rest in Shaw Cemetery, Newbury on the 6th June. Abode at time of death, 6 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.
