Henry, his parents, siblings and early life:

Henry George Arnold was baptised on the 25th June 1837, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Arnold (nee Northway) who were married on the 20th March 1826, in Thatcham, both were single.

Henry’s father John was born on the 14th March 1806, he was baptised on the 30th March 1806, in Thatcham, the son of George and Maria Arnold (nee Rhodes) who were married on the 8th September 1801, in Thatcham.

Henry’s mother Mary was born on the 19th January 1804, she was baptised on the 4th March 1804, in Thatcham, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Northway (nee Adlams) who were married on the 5th January 1799, in Thatcham. Mary had an illegitimate daughter Sarah, baptised on the 31st July 1825, in Thatcham (it’s not known if John Arnold was the father, as no information for the father given).

Known children of John and Mary were:

Elizabeth, baptised 2nd September 1827, in Thatcham

John, baptised 12th July 1829, in Thatcham

Mary, baptised 17th July 1831, in Thatcham                              

Noah, baptised 27th October 1833, in Thatcham

and

Hannah, born c1836, in Thatcham

Matilda, born c1839, born in Thatcham

Rebecca, born 1841, born in Thatcham

Margaret, born c1842, born in Thatcham

The 1841 census records John (38), as a Labourer, living in Newtown, Thatcham, with Mary (35) and their children, Sarah, (now known as Sarah Arnold) John (11), Mary (10), Noah (8), Hannah (5), Henry (4), a female (3) (Possibly Matilda) and two other males (no information given).

Mary was widowed sometime between 1841-1851 (please note: not the death in 1849 in Newbury, this John was aged 62. (possibly the husband of Mary (nee Cook) who married in 1821 in Thatcham)

In 1851 Mary (42), a widow, was recorded as a Weaver, living in Shaw Road, Speenhamland, Berkshire, with her daughters Sarah (23), a Seamstress, Mary (19), Margaret (9) and her granddaughters, Ann Arnold (5) and Louisa Arnold (2). Mary’s other children, Hannah (16), Henry (14), a Servant, Matilda (12) and Rebecca (10) were recorded as inmates, in the Newbury, Workhouse.

Henry’s mother Mary remarried on the 10th November 1855, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Her 2nd husband was a widower, John Jennings, a Milkman, abode, Speen.

Mary Jennings died aged 55, in 1859.She was buried on the 10th December, at St James the Less, Winterbourne, Berkshire

Henry in later life:

Henry joined the Army, serving as a Private in the 107th Foot Regiment. UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges, 1715-1925, record him in receipt of a pension from the 18th July 1876.

***No previous marriage found for Henry.

(Ellen Susan Everard was baptised on the 16th August 1835, in Hartley Wespall, Hampshire the daughter of Joseph (a Farmer) and Ann Everard (nee Hoare) who were married on the 26th May 1817, in Odiham, Hampshire (Joseph was from the parish on Hartley Wespall)

In 1881 Henry (41) was recorded as a Chelsea Pensioner, living in Fidler’s Cottages, Speenhamland, Berkshire, with Ellen (45)

The 1891 census records Henry (51), a G.W. Railway Labourer and Ellen (53), living in Fidler’s Buildings, Speenhamland.

The 1901 census records also records Henry (62), and Ellen (65), living in Fidler’s Buildings, Speenhamland. Henry was now working as a Platelayer for the G.W.R.

Henry was widowed in 1902, Ellen died aged 66, she was buried on the 18th January, a St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

Henry died aged 69, in 1906, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th June.
