Jane Ayres

1840-1888

Jane, her parents, siblings and early life:

Jane was born in Burghclere, Hampshire. She was baptised on the 1^st November 1840, in Burghclere, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Mary Cummins (nee Blackford) who were married on the 10^th February 1838, in Burghclere.

Jane’s father William was baptised on the 22^nd January 1815 in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the son of William and Elizabeth Cummins.

Her mother Mary was born c1817. (Possible baptism 9^th March 1817, in East Woodhay, Hampshire, the daughter of John and Hannah. NOT PROVED)

Jane’s siblings were:

Charles, born c1839, baptised (as Charles Comyns) 13^th January 1839 in Kingsclere

Thomas, born 1842, baptiesed 4^th September 1842, in Burghclere

Henry, born c1846 baptised 8^th July 1846, in Burghclere

William, born 1848, baptised 17^th September 1848 in Burghclere

In 1841 Jane (8 months) was living in Burghclere, with her father William (25), an Agricultural Labourer, her mother Mary (25) and her brother, Charles (2).

Jane’s mother Mary died aged 33 in 1850. She was buried on the 11^th April, in Burghclere.

William (36), an Agricultural Labourer, Charles (12), Jane (10) and Thomas (8), living in Burghclere in 1851.

William remarried in 1853 in Ecchinswell, Hampshire. His 2^nd wife was a widow, Jane Hart/Hunt (nee Illsley). They had the following children: Mary Ann, 1854, George, 1856, Fanny, 1857, Lucy 1859 and Alice c1866.

Jane’s father Willliam died aged 75 in 1888, he was buried on the 22^nd June, in Burghclere.

Jane in later life:

The 1861 census records Jane (20) (surname recorded as Comgens on ancestry) working as a Domestic Servant, for widowed Builder, George Adey (64), in West Mills, Newbury, Berkshire.

Jane married James Ayres in 1863 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(James was baptised on the 26^th December 1841, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John (a Labourer) and Fanny Ayres (nee Foster) who were married on the 20^th May 1839, at St Nicolas, Newbury).

James and Jane had the following children:

John James, born 1864

Robert Thomas, born 1866

Sarah Jane, born 1868

Frances Fanny, born 1870

A stillborn child in 1873 (buried in the NRC on the 4^th April)

Phoebe Annie, born 1877

In 1871 James Ayres (29), a Blacksmith, employing 2 apprentices, Jane (29), Thomas (4), Sarah Jane (2) and Frances Fanny (5 months), were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

The 1881 census records James Ayres (39), a Blacksmith, Jane (39), Robert (14), a Boat Builder, Sarah (12), Frances (10) and Phoebe (4), living in Speen, Berkshire.

James and Jane’s son John James Ayres died aged 17, on the 29^th March 1881, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th April.

Jane Ayres died aged 48, in Wallingford, Berkshire, (possibly the Berkshire Lunatic Asylum) on the 4^th August. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with her son John James, on the 11^th August.

James Ayers died aged 46, in 1889, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Jane and their son John James, on the 24^th July.
