David Geater

c1826-1912

David, his parents, siblings and early life:

David was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Lawrence and Mary Geater (nee Blackman) who were married on the 29^th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury).

His father Lawrence was baptised on the 14^th September 1788, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Geater (nee Langfield) who were married on the 10^th October 1787, in Kintbury. Lawrence died aged 88, in 1873. His funeral service was also held at St John the Evangelist Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th March.

David’s mother Mary was baptised on the 23^rd January 1785, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Christian (spelt Xtian) Blackman

Lawrence and Mary also had the following children:

Elizabeth Gater baptised 18^th May 1814, at St Nicolas, Newbury

William Geater, baptised 14^th April 1816, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Ann Gater, baptised 19^th April 1818, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Twins: George and Thomas Gater, baptised 28^th August 1820 (Thomas died aged 2 years 2 months, he was buried on the 15^th November 1822, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Charles Gaiter, born 18^th May 1822, baptised 20^th April 1823 (Wesleyan Methodist)

Joseph, born c1830

In 1815 Lawrence Geatter (27), Mary (29), their son John (3) and their daughter Elizabeth (1), were living on the west side of Newtown Lane, Newbury.

The 1841 census records Lawrence (55), a Bricklayer, Mary (50), their daughter Ann (20), a Bonnet Maker, and their sons, David (15), a Bricklayer’s Labourer and Joseph (11), living in Newtown Road, Newbury.

David’s father Lawrence was a widower by 1842, (Possible death for Mary Geater, December quarter 1841, in Newbury) as records show he remarried on the 19^th March 1842, at St Nicolas, Newbury. His new wife was Mary Ann Allen (nee Samuels/Samuells)

Lawrence and Mary Ann had a son Richard, born c1843, in Newbury.

David in later life:

David married Elizabeth Vince in 1847 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury)

(Elizabeth was born on the 18^th September 1828, in Greenham, Berkshire. She was baptised as Elizabeth Barker on the 12^th October 1828, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the illegitimate daughter of Richard Barker (a Chinaman) and Charlotte Vince. Her mother married Charles Bull in 1835, in Thatcham).

David and Elizabeth had the following children:

Jane, c1847 (possibly born before her parents married as Mary Jane Vince, birth registered in the Sept. quarter 1847)

Alfred, 1857

Henry James, 1860

The 1851 census records David (25), a Journeyman Bricklayer, Elizabeth (23), Jane (4) and Sarah (1), living in Newbury Yard, Greenham, Berkshire.

In 1861 David (36), a Bricklayer, Elizabeth (36), Jane (13), Sarah (11), Esable (8), (Isabel) Alfred (4) and Henry George (1), (Henry James) were still living in Greenham.

The 1871 census records David (45), a Journeyman Bricklayer, his children, Isabel (20), Alfred (14), Henry George (11) and Rose (7) and his granddaughter Kate (1), (Kate was mistakenly recorded as his daughter, she was the illegitimate daughter of Isabel Geater) living in Albert Place, Newbury (No record found for Eizabeth)

In 1881 David (54) and Elizabeth (52) were living in Westfields, Newbury.

The 1891 census records David (65), a Bricklayer and his daughter Rose (27), a Dressmaker, living at 26A Bartholomew Street, Newbury. Elizabeth (62) was recorded working as a Nurse in Waterloo Villa, Craven Road, Newbury, the home of Robert Stevens (78).

In 1901 David (75) and Elizabeth (72) were living at 15 New Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

The 1911 census records David (85), who was nearly blind and Elizabeth (84), living at 15 New Church Almshouses. Their daughter Rose (40), a Dressmaker was also recorded living with them, as their carer.

David was widowed on the 4^th October 1911, Elizabeth died aged 83. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th October.

David died aged 87, on the 19^th April 1912. He was laid to rest with Elizabeth on the 24^th April.

(David and Elizabeth’s daughters, Isabel Geater (c1854-1936) and Rose Titcombe (1863-1947) are also recorded on their parents Memorial Inscription. Both died in Wokingham. Isabel was buried at St Mary’s Cemetery, Shinfield, Berkshire)
