Elizabeth’s family:

Elizabeth’s mother Mary Ann Pocock (aka Ann) was born on the 5th November 1806. She was baptised on the 16th November 1806, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Pocock (nee Tarrant) who were married on the 31st January 1803, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Her father John (surname recorded as Fartridge on ancestry) was baptised on the 27th October 1811, Newtown, Hampshire, the son of Joel and Mary Partridge (nee Edgley) who were married on the 9th July1798, in Burghclere, Hampshire.

Mary Ann Pocock and John Partridge married on the 21st August 1831, at St Nicolas, Church Newbury. Both were single, John was recorded as a soujourner.

John and Mary Ann had the following children:

Charles, baptised 19th June 1831, at St Nicolas, Newbury (born and baptised before his parents married, John recorded as a Labourer, abode, Newtown)

Henry, 1838

John, 1840

Elizabeth, 1842

Elizabeth, Henry and John were all baptised on the 26th June 1842 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. Their father John was recorded as a Sawyer.                                                                                                                                                                                                            

The 1841 census records Elizabeth’s mother Ann Patridge (30) and her children, Charles (10), George (8), Maria (5), Henry (3) and John (1), living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire. (No confirmed census record found for John)

On the 24th January 1842, Elizabeth’s father John (32) and two others, Charles Smith (39) and John Gibbons (19), were charged with unlawfully entering enclosed lands of the Earl of Carnarvon, armed with guns and bludgeons, for the purpose of stealing game. They were all found guilty at the Southampton County Assizes, on the 24th February 1824 and were each sentenced to 9 calendar months hard labour, in Bridewell. (Bridewell Prison was established c1553-1556 in London on the banks of the Fleet River. It was the first "house of correction" for punishing petty criminals, vagrants, and the disorderly poor, through hard labour. It closed in 1855)

Elizabeth’s mother Ann died aged 39, in 1844, she was buried on the 16th June, in Newtown Hampshire.

The 1851 census records Elizabeth’s father John (39), an Agricultural Labourer, living in Burghclere, Hampshire, with his children, John (11), Fanny (5), William (3), James (4 months) and a lodger, widow, Eliza Smith (39) and her children, Edmond (15) and Jane (11). (James, Fanny and William’s births were all registered with the surname Smith).

John married Eliza Smith on the 26th January 1856, in Newtown, Hampshire.

(Eliza was born c1811 in Newtown Hampshire the daughter of James and Ann Bridgeman (nee Neate) who were married on the 29th April 1810, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Eliza married Daniel Smith on the 23rd May 1831, in Thatcham, Berkshire She was widowed in 1841. Daniel died aged 36. He was buried on the 14th February, in Newtown, Hampshire).

John and Eliza also had the following two children:

The 1861 census records John (51), an Agricultural Labourer, Eliza (50) and their children, Fanny (14), William (11), James (9), Joseph (7) and Francis (4), living in Newtown, Hampshire

In 1871 John (61), a Labourer, Eliza (60), a Laundress, James (19) and Francis (14), both Labourers, were again recorded living in Newtown, Hampshire.

In 1881 John (71), James (29) and Frank (23), were all recorded working as Labourers, living in Newtown with Eliza (70).

John died aged 76, in 1885, he was buried on the 12th February in Newtown (abode recorded as Burghclere)

Eliza died aged 75, in 1886, in the Newbury Workhouse. Her body was taken to Newtown, Hampshire, where she was buried on the 20th October.

Elizabeth:

Elizabeth (6) was recorded in the 1851 census, lodging in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with William Gough (27), a Bricklayer, his wife Ann (25) and Sarah Pocock (79), a Nurse. (Surname recorded as Partrick on ancestry)

In 1861 Elizabeth (17) was recorded as a servant out of place, lodging in Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire, with Thomas Hazell (28), his wife Ellen (27) and their three children.

Elizabeth died aged 20 in 1864, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th May
