William, his parents, siblings and early life:

William Pike was born on the 6th May 1858, he was baptised as William Edward (FMP records his middle name as Edwin) on the 4th July 1858, in Oare, Berkshire, the son of George and Ellen Pike (nee Hamblin) who were married on the 3rd May 1851, in Chieveley, Berkshire (surname recorded as Pyke at time of marriage)

His father George Pyke was baptised on the 16th March 1828, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of William and Lucy Pyke (nee Sellwood) who were married on the 11th January 1824, in Chieveley.

William’s mother Ellen was baptised on the 14th March 1830, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of Robert and Sarah Hamblin (nee Goslin) who were married on the 6th October 1828, at St Mary, Chieveley

George and Ellen also had the following children:

Frances Ann, born 1851, in Chieveley (died aged 5 weeks, buried 16th June 1851, at St Mary the Virgin, Chieveley)

Amelia Jessie, born 1855, baptised in 1855 in Oare

George, born c1861, in Chieveley

Charles, born c1864, in Chieveley

Edith, born 1867, baptised Edith Ann 1867 in Chieveley

Henry, born 1869, baptised in 1869 in Chieveley (died 1869, buried 11th November, at St Mary the Virgin, Chieveley)

Jesse, born 1873, in Chieveley

The 1861 census records George Pike (31), an Agricultural Labourer, Ellen (30), their children, Amelia (5), William (2), George (1 month) and Sarah Hamblin (69), living in Chieveley, Berkshire.

In 1871 William (12), was living in the village of Horsemoor, Chieveley, Berkshire, with his father George Pike (45), an Agricultural Labourer, his mother Ellen (42), his sisters Amelia (14) and Edith (5) and his brothers, George (10) and Charles (7).

The 1881 census records George Pike (53), an Agricultural Labourer, Ellen (51), William (26), an Agricultural Labourer, Edith (14) and Jesse (7), living in Down End, Chieveley.

(Elizabeth Fuller Grace was born in Peasemore, Berkshire. She was baptised in Peasemore on the 13th September 1863, the daughter of George and Alice Grace (nee Hatt) who were married on the 26th July 1862, in Peasemore).

William and Elizabeth had a son, Frank William Pike, born in 1882, in North Heath, Chieveley, Berkshire.

The 1891 census records William Pike (31), an Agricultural Labourer, Elizabeth (27) and their son Frank (8), living in Arlington Cottages, Snelsmore, Berkshire.

In 1901 William Pike (42), an Ordinary Agricultural Labourer and Elizabeth (37), were living in “Lower Lodge” Oxford Road, Snelsmore, Berkshire.

The 1911 census records William Pyke (52), a Farm Carter, living at Sandleford Lodge, Greenham, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (42), their grandson Wilfred William Stanley Pyke (4) and Elizabeth’s niece, Edith Agnes Grace (14).

In 1921 William Pyke (63), Elizabeth (57), and their grandson, Stanley (14), (Wilfred William Stanley) were recorded living at 1, Warren Cottages, Park Lane, Wash Common, Newbury. William was working as a Farm Labourer, at Sandleford Farm, for Mr. Butler, a Dairy Farmer.

William was widowed in 1931, Elizabeth Fuller Pyke died aged 68. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st December.

The 1939 Register records William Pyke as an Old Age Pensioner, living at Haley Cottage, Wantage Road, Wantage, Berkshire, with his widowed sister-in-law, Eleanor Benson (nee Grace).

William Edward Pike died aged 82, on the 19th April 1941, in the Newbury Workhouse, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd April.
