Noah Pike/Pyke

Noah was baptised on the 26^th July 1829, in Hungerford, Berkshire, the son of Sylvanus/Silvanus and Anne Pike.

In 1851 Noah (20) was recorded as a visitor at the home of James and Sarah Humphreys and their family, in Speen, Berkshire. He was single and was working as a Labourer.

The 1861 census records Noah (33) as a Tinker, living in Brimpton, Berkshire, with his “wife” Susanna (40) and their children, Matilda (10), Eliza (7) and Neptune (1).

(no marriage found for Noah and Susan(nah). Neptune’s birth was registered in the December quarter 1859, in Basingstoke, mother’s maiden name was recorded as Smith)

In 1871 Noah (44) was recorded as a Traveller, living in tents at Simms Farm, West End, Mortimer, Berkshire, with his wife (44), Eliza (16), Neptune (10), Susan (7), James (5), Jane (3), a I year old son, and a baby son aged 2 months.

In 1881 Noah (52) was working as a Cane Chair Bottomer, living in New Road, Tadley, Hampshire, with Susanna (43), who was working as a Hawker and their children, Neptune (21), a Hawker, Susan (17), James (15), John (11), Mary A. (10), Honor (9) and Esther (7).

The 1891 census records Noah (62), Susan (60), John (20) and Esther (17), living at 9 Gas House Road, Newbury, Berkshire. All four were recorded as Hawkers.

By 1901 all of their children had left home, Noah (81) and Susan (75) were living at 11 Kennet Court, Newbury. Noah was working as a Pedlar/Hawker.

Noah was widowed in 1907, Susan Pyke died aged 79, on the 9^th November, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th November

In 1911 Noah (82), occupation, Cane Chair Bottomer, was recorded as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.

Noah Pyke died aged 83, in the Workhouse, in 1912, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th November.
