Ernest Henry Hill was born in Kintbury in 1864 the son of Richard and Jedidah, nee Carter, Hill. He was baptized 6 March 1864 at St Mary in Kintbury. In the 1871 census Ernest was living with his parents Richard and Jedidah in Forbury Lodge in Kintbury with sister Sarah Louisa aged 5. Richard was recorded as a coachman. At present no trace of Ernest in the 1881 census. Ernest married Jane Skinner on 13 July 1890 at St John in Newbury. He was recorded as a carman living in Speenhamland at the time of the marriage. Jane Skinner was born in 1862 in Greenham, the daughter of John and Eliza, nee Bradley, Skinner. Jane was recorded with her parents and brother Frederick aged 12 in Stroud Green in the 1871 census, her father John was recorded as a hatter. Ten years later in the 1881 census she was still living in Stroud Green with her parents and uncle Richard Bradley and was recorded as a dressmaker.

Ernest and Jane had a daughter Florence Elsie who was born in March 1891. Two weeks later in the 1891 census Ernest and Jane were recorded living at 36 West Street in Newbury with daughter Florence and a lodger, Ernest's occupation was a furniture porter. Florence died only a few weeks after the census aged one month and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 April 1891.

A son Richard John was born in September 1892. Sadly, he died aged eleven weeks and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 November 1892. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 1 December 1892 which read as below.

HILL — Nov 26, at 36 West Street, Richard John, the dearly loved child of Ernest and Jane Hill, aged 11 weeks.

Another son Ernest Henry was born in 1896. He died aged five days and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 3 March 1896. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 6 February 1896 which read as below.

HILL — Feb 4, at 30, West Street, the infant son of Ernest Henry Hill

A daughter Winifred May was born circa July 1899. She died aged eight months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 2 April 1900.

In the 1901 census Ernest and Jane were living at 36 West Street in Newbury with son Albert Henry aged 6, with Ernest recorded as a furniture carman.

Ten years later in the 1911 census Ernest and Jane were living at 36 West Street in Newbury with son Albert Henry aged 17 and Ernest's mother Jedidah Hill. Ernest was recorded as a furniture dealers carman and Albert as a shop assistant apprentice.

In the 1930 electoral register Ernest and Jane were recorded at 1 Kimber's Almhouses in West Street.

Ernest died January 1937 aged 72 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 January 1937. He was still living at 1 Kimber's Almhouses.

Jane died just weeks later and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 February 1937.

Ernest's mother Jedidah Hill was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 March 1914. Jane's parents were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, her father John on 17 December 1902 and her mother Eliza on 30 October 1896.
