Richard Dredge

Richard, his parents, siblings and early life:

Richard was baptised on the 5^th August 1796, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the son of James and Anna Maria Dredge.

Richard’s father James was a Victualler and Basket Maker. He was born c1763. James died (of decline) aged 40, in 1803. He was buried on the 30^th March, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Richard’s mother Anna Maria was born c1765. She died aged 69 in 1834 and was buried on the 12^th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

James and Anna Maria also had the following children (baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

Nathaniel and David, (baptised together) 13^th November 1789

William, 16^th May 1792

George, 18^th April 1794 (born 14^th March 1794)

John, 21^st May 1798

Anna Maria, 30^th October 1799 (born 22^nd September 1799)

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (16), a Locksmith, living at the Nags Head, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with his widowed mother Anna Maria (47), his brothers, David (21), a Basket Maker, George (20), a Smith, Richard (17), a Basket Maker and his sister Anna Maria (15).

Richard married Hannah Pickernell on the 24^th April 1825, in Hamstead Marshall, Berkshire. (Both were single, witnesses were James Pickernell and Anna Maria Fidler)

(Hannah was baptised on the 31^st March 1794, in Hamstead Marshall, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Sarah Pickernell (nee Paine) who were married on the 1^st May 1791, at St Michael, Enborne, Berkshire)

Richard and Hannah had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Anna Maria, 14^th April 1826 (born 17^th March)

David, 9^th March 1828 (born 12^th February)

Richard, 3^rd September 1830 (born 12^th August)

Hannah, 28^th July 1833 (born 4^th July)

Martha, 15^th May 1836 (born 15^th May)

Harriott Elizabeth, 2^nd June 1839 (born 9^th May)

The 1841 census records Richard (40), a Basket Maker, Hannah (45), Anna (15), David (13), Richard (10), Hannah (7), Martha (5) and Harriott (2), living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

In 1851 Richard (54), a Basket Maker, Hannah (57) and their children, David (23), a Basket Maker, Richard (20), a Shoemaker and Harriott (11), were recorded living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

In 1861 Richard (64), was recorded as a Proprietor of Houses, living at 4, Southampton Terrace, Newbury, with Hannah (66) and their daughter Martha (25), a Dressmaker.

Richard was widowed in 1867. Hannah died aged 74, on the 4^th September, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th September.

The 1871 census records Richard (74) as a Retired Basket Maker. He was still living at 4 Southampton Terrace, Newbury. His daughters Hannah (37) and Harriott (31) were record living with him.

Richard died aged 76, on the 10^th July 1872, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Hannah on the 15^th July.
