John Dredge

1798-1869

John, his parents, siblings and early life:

John was born on the 21 ^st May 1798, in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 22^nd June 1798, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of James and Anna Maria Dredge.

John’s father James was a Victualler and Basket Maker. He was born c1763. James died (of decline) aged 40, in 1803. He was buried on the 30^th March, at St Nicolas, Newbury

John’s mother Anna Maria was born c1765. She died aged 69 in 1834 and was buried on the 12^thDecember, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

James and Anna Maria also had the following children (baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

William, 16^th May 1792

George, 18^th April 1794 (born 14^th March 1794)

Richard, 5^th August 1796

Anna Maria, 30^th October 1799 (born 22^nd September 1799)

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (16), a Locksmith, living at the Nags Head, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with his widowed mother Anna Maria (47), his brothers, David (21), a Basket Maker, George (20), a Smith, Richard (17), a Basket Maker and his sister Anna Maria (15).

John in later life:

John married Sophia Viner Faulkner on the 23^rd August 1831, at St Lawrence, Hungerford, Berkshire.

(Sophia Viner Faulkner was baptised in 1801 in Hungerford, the daughter of Joseph and Sophia Faulkner (nee Viner) who were married in 1799, in Hungerford)

John and Sophia had the following children:

John, c1833 (died aged 6 months, buried 7^th August 1833, at St Lawrence, Hungerford)

The 1841 census records John (40) as an Auctioneer, living in Charnham Street, Hungerford, Berkshire, with Sophia (35) and their son John (4)

The 1851 census also records John (52) an Auctioneer, living in Charnham Street, Hungerford with his wife Sophia (50) and their sons John (14) and Joseph (9).

John was widowed in 1857. Sophia died aged 56, she was buried on the 25^th August, at St Lawrence, Hungerford.

In 1861 John (62) was still working as an Auctioneer, living in Charnham Street, Hungerford, with his sons, John (24), and Joseph (19), who were both Assistants and a House Servant.

By 1869 John was living in the hamlet of York Town, Frimley, Surrey. John died aged 70, on the 20^th February 1869, in York Town, his body was brought to Newbury, where he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th February. (John’s sister Anna Maria (1799-1882) and her husband Charles Pike (1796- 1887) were laid to rest with him)
