James William Plumb

c1827-1912

James was baptised on the 19^thAugust 1827, in Hampstead Marshall, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sophia Plumb (nee Povey) who were married on the 26^thNovember 1821, in Hampstead Marshall.

His father Thomas was baptised in 1798, in Hampstead Marshall, the son of Ann Plumb.

His mother Sophia was born c1801. Sophia died aged 26, in 1827, in Hampstead Marshall and was buried on the 8^thJune, (before James was baptised) in Hampstead Marshall.

Thomas and Sophia also had the following two daughters baptised in Hampstead Marshall:

Jane, 4^thJuly 1824

James William’s father Thomas “married” Mary ? (no marriage found yet!)

(Mary was born c1810, in Hampstead Marshall)

They had a son Robert, baptised 1^stApril 1836

James married Alice Marshall on the 13^thJanuary 1850, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire.

(Alice Marchell was born in Bagnor, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 9^thApril 1826, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire the daughter of William (a Labourer of Bagnor) and Amy Marshall (nee Strange) who were married on the 31^stMay 1822, at St Mary, Abchurch, City of London.

James and Alice had the following children:

Emma Jane, born 1852, baptised 31^st October 1852, at St Nicolas, Newbury

James William, born c1855, baptised 25^th February 1855, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Frederick Thomas, born c1857, baptised 1^st March 1857, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Fanny, born 1859, baptised 17^th July 1859, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Ann, born 1861 (died aged 18, (as Anna) buried in the NRC, on the 3^rdFebruary 1878)

The 1851 census records James (23), Alice (25), their daughter Alice (0) and two visitors, living in Wash Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1861 James (31), a Market Gardener, Alice (38) and their children, Alice (10), Emma (8), James William (6), Frederick (4), Fanny (2) and two servants, were living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury.

James became bankrupt in 1864

In 1871 the family were recorded living in Bartholomew Street, as follows: James (42), a Gardener, Alice (44), Emma (19), James (16), a Gardener/Domestic Servant, Fred (14), a Shop Porter, Fanny (12), Annie (10), Elizabeth (8) and Louisa (3)

The 1881 census records James (52), a Market Gardener, living at 1 Ashton Court, Newbury with Alice (54) and their children, James William (26), a Market Gardener, Frederick Thomas (24), a Maltster’s Labourer, Elizabeth (16), a General Domestic Servant, (mistakenly recorded as Elizabeth Ann) and Ann Louisa (13) (Louisa Jane).

In 1891 James (69), a Market Gardener, Alice (70) and their sons, James (38) and Frederick (35), both labourers, were recorded living at 5 Shrewsbury Terrace, Enborne Road, Newbury.

The 1901 census records James (77), a Market Gardener and Alice (80) living at 4 Raymond’s New Almshouses, Newbury. (James was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse in December 1900).

Alice died aged 87 in 1907, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^thNovember.

The 1911 census records James (87) and his son James (56), a Garden Labourer, living at 4 Upper Raymond’s Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

James died aged 86, on the 2^ndMay 1912, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^thMay (as James William).

Please note: James William’s surname was mistakenly recorded as Clumb when his death was registered.
