Alice Plumb

Alice, her parents, siblings and early life:
Alice Marchell was born in Bagnor, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 9thApril 1826, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of William (a Labourer of Bagnor) and Amy/Amey Marshall (nee Strange) who were married at St Mary, in the City of London, on the 31stMay 1822.
Alice’s father William was baptised on the 27thJanuary 1799, in Bagnor, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Marshall (nee Dennis) who were married on the 17thDecember 1797, in Speen. William died aged 65, in 1864. His funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist Newbury. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8thFebruary.
Her mother Amey was baptised on the 15thFebruary 1801, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Olive Strange (formerly Sheppard nee Honiwell,) who were married on the 12thDecember 1799, in Speen. Amy died aged 80, in 1881. Her funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14thOctober.
William and Amy also had the following children baptised in Speen:

The 1841 census records Alice (15) living in Stockcross, Berkshire, with her father William (40), a Dealer in Hay, her mother Amy (40), her sisters, Ann (15) and Emma (15) and her brother William (13).
Alice in later life:
Alice married James Plumb on the 13thJanuary 1850, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire
(James was baptised on the 19thAugust 1827, in Hampstead Marshall, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sophia Plumb (nee Povey) who were married on the 26thNovember 1821, in Hampstead Marshall).
James and Alice had the following children:
Alice Jane, born 1850, baptised 28th July 1850, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Emma Jane, born 1852, baptised 31st October 1852, at St Nicolas, Newbury
James William, born c1855, baptised 25th February 1855, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Frederick Thomas, born c1857, baptised 1st March 1857, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Fanny, born 1859, baptised 17th July 1859, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Ann, born 1861 (died aged 18, (as Anna) buried in the NRC, on the 3rd February 1878)

The 1851 census records James (23), Alice (25), their daughter Alice (0) and two visitors, living in Wash Road, Newbury, Berkshire.
In 1861 James (31), a Market Gardener, Alice (38) and their children, Alice (10), Emma (8), James William (6), Frederick (4), Fanny (2) and two servants, were living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury.
In 1871 the family were recorded living in Bartholomew Street, as follows: James (42), a Gardener, Alice (44), Emma (19), James (16), a Gardener/Domestic Servant, Fred (14), a Shop Porter, Fanny (12), Annie (10), Elizabeth (8) and Louisa (3)
The 1881 census records James (52), a Market Gardener, living at 1 Ashton Court, Newbury with Alice (54) and their children, James William (26), a Market Gardener, Frederick Thomas (24), a Maltster’s Labourer, Elizabeth (16), a General Domestic Servant, (mistakenly recorded as Elizabeth Ann) and Ann Louisa (13) (Louisa Jane).
In 1891 James (69), a Market Gardener, Alice (70) and their sons, James (38) and Frederick (35), both labourers, were recorded living at 5 Shrewsbury Terrace, Enborne Road, Newbury.
The 1901 census records James (77), a Market Gardener and Alice (80) living at 4 Raymond’s New Almshouses, Newbury. (James was allocated the Raymond’s Almshouse in December 1900)
Alice died aged 87, on the 9thNovember 1907, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14thNovember.
The 1911 census records James (87) and his son James (56), a Garden Labourer, living at 4 Upper Raymond’s Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.
James died aged 86 in 1912, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8thMay (as James William).
Please note: James William’s surname was mistakenly recorded as Clumb when his death was registered.
