TOM HARRY WALKER 

 

Tom was born in 1878 in Loughborough, Leics. to Henry & Annie (Ref: 12639).

Q1 Loughborough 7a 135.

 

He was baptised on 17 March 1878 at All Saints, Lutterworth, Leics.

 

By 1881, aged 3, the family had moved to 6, Broad Street, Warwick. Henry was a Superintendent Agent in an Insurance Company. Annie was 33 & there were 3 siblings: Walter W, 7; John H, 5 & Harold M, 10 weeks (Ref: 1115). Tom’s Aunt Sarah Mayes, 28, was also living with them.

 

They then moved to Newbury &, in 1891, they were living at 16, Craven Street.

Tom was 13, John H, 15; Harold M, 10 & Frank, 8.

 

Tom worked for the British Postal Service & was appointed as a Learner in Newbury in December 1896. He then moved to Wokingham & was appointed as a Sorting Clerk & Telegraphist in December 1897.

 

Tom then joined the 1st Volunteer Battalion Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) & fought in the Boer War as a Private 6899.

He died on 14 October 1900, aged 22, of Enteric fever (Typhoid) at Middleburg, S. Africa. His brother, Harold, also fought in the Boer War in the same regiment but survived.

 Tom is remembered on his mother’s grave inscription in NRC.
