George Nailor

1839-1903

George Nailor was born in 1839, in Bucklebury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 19^th May 1839, at St Mary the Virgin, Bucklebury, the son on James and Charlotte Nailer (nee Gibbins/Giffin/Giffins/Griffin) who were married on the 31^st July 1830, at St Giles, Reading Berkshire.

George’s father James was baptised on the 17^th July 1774, in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Nailor. He died aged 78, in 1885 and was buried on the 24^th May, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.

According to census records George’s mother Charlotte was born c1808, in Bucklebury. She died aged 77, in 1885 and was buried on the 3^rd January 1886, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donington

In 1841, George Nailor (2) was living in Lower Common, Bucklebury, Berkshire, with his father James (30), an Agricultural Labourer, his mother Charlotte (30), his brothers, Francis (9), Edmond (6) and Israel (1 month)

The 1851 census records James Nailor (44), an Agricultural Labourer, Charlotte (43), George (12), Leonora (4) and Charles (1), living in Bucklebury.

(Elizabeth Townsend was born in 1838, in Beedon, Berkshire, the daughter of Jacob and Maria Townsend (nee Belcher) who were married on the 20^th November 1837, in Compton, Berkshire)

Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Isabella Townsend, in 1859, before she married George.

George and Elizabeth had the following children:

The 1861 census records George Nailer (22) as a Coachman, living in Horsemoor, Chieveley, Berkshire with Elizabeth (22) and Isabella aged 1 (now known as Isabella Nailor/Nailor)

In 1871 George Nailer (32) was again recorded as a Coachman. He was living in Oxford Road, Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (32) and their children Isabella (11), Clara (9), George (6) and Robert William (11 months).

In 1881 George Nailor (42) was recorded as a Public Housekeeper at the “Row Barge” South Road, Woolhampton, Berkshire. Also recorded in the census for this year was his wife Elizabeth (42) and their children, Robert (10), Leonorah (3) and Albert (1).

The 1891 census records George Nailor (53), a Coachman, living at 11, South View, Greenham, Berkshire. His daughter Leonorah (13) was recorded living with him. (No confirmed record found for George’s wife Elizabeth, in this census)

In 1901 George Nailor (62), Elizabeth (62), their grandson Robert Frederick Nailor (10) (son of their son George) and visitors, Sarah (28) and Ellen Noon (2 months), were recorded living at Harris Cottages, Greenham, Berkshire.

George Nailor died aged 64, on the 1^st March 1903, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th March.

Elizabeth after George’s death:

The 1911 census records Elizabeth Nailor (72) living at 5, East View, Livingstone Road, Newbury, Berkshire. Also recorded in the household was a General Domestic Servant, Kate Wiggins (21)

Elizabeth Nailor died aged 75, in 1912, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^th August.
