Elizabeth Nailor

Elizabeth, her parents, siblings and early life:

Elizabeth Townsend/Townshend was born in Beedon, Berkshire, the daughter of Jacob and Maria Townsend (nee Belcher) who were married on the 20^th November 1837, in Compton, Berkshire.

Jacob and Maria also had the following two children:

Hannah, born in 1840, in Hampstead Norris

Richard, born in 1844, in Beedon (died aged 4 months, buried 26^th July, at St Nicholas, Beedon).

Elizabeth’s mother Maria was baptised in 1817, in Compton, Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Mary Belcher.

Elizabeth’s father Jacob was an Agricultural Labourer. He was baptised in 1815, in Beedon, Berkshire, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Townsend (nee Heather) who were married in 1806, in Beedon. Jacob died aged 85, in 1900, he was buried on the 19^th August, at St Nicholas, Beedon. (Surname recorded as Townsin)

In 1841 Jacob (25), an Agricultural Labourer, Maria (20), Elizabeth (2) and Hannah (10 months), were living near the Brick Kiln, in Beedon, Berkshire.

Elizabeth’s mother Maria died aged 27, in 1845, she was buried on the 13^th June, at St Nicholas, Beedon.

Elizabeth’s father Jacob remarried on the 10^th November 1845, at St Nicholas, Beedon. His 2^nd wife was Charlotte Coventry

(Charlotte was born in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 5^th September 1824, in Baydon, Wiltshire, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Coventry. Charlotte died aged 85 in 1910 and was buried on the 14^th December, at St Nicholas, Beedon. Surname recorded as Townsin)

In 1851 Elizabeth (12) was recorded living in Beedon with her father Jacob (36), her stepmother Charlotte (26), her sister Hannah (10), her half-siblings, Richard (4), Joseph (2), Maria (10 months) and her grandfather Richard Townsend (74).

Elizabeth in later life:

Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Isabella Townsend, in 1859.

She married in 1860

The 1861 census records George Nailer (22) as a Coachman, living in Horsemoor, Chieveley, Berkshire with Elizabeth (22) and Isabella aged 1 (now known as Isabella Nailor/Nailer)

In 1871 George Nailer (32) was again recorded as a Coachman. He was living in Oxford Road, Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (32) and their children Isabella (11), Clara (9), George (6) and Robert William (11 months).

In 1881 George Nailor (42) Elizabeth (42) and their children, Robert (10), Leonorah (3) and Albert (1), were living at the “Row Barge” South Road, Woolhampton, Berkshire. George was recorded as a Public House Keeper.

The 1891 census records George Nailor (53), a Coachman, living at 11, South View, Greenham, Berkshire. His daughter Leonorah (13) was recorded living with him. (No confirmed record found for Elizabeth, in this census)

In 1901 George Nailor (62), Elizabeth (62), their grandson Robert Frederick Nailor (10) (son of their son George) and visitors, Sarah Noon (28) and Ellen Noon (2 months), were recorded living in Harris Cottages, Greenham, Berkshire.

Elizabeth was widowed in 1903. George Nailor died aged 64, on the 1^st March, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th March.

The 1911 census records Elizabeth Nailor (72) living at 5, East View, Livingstone Road, Newbury, Berkshire. Also recorded in the household was a general domestic servant, Kate Wiggins (21)

Elizabeth Nailor died aged 75, in 1912, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^th August. (Abode at time of death, 2 Bone Lane, Greenham, Newbury)
