Robert was baptised on the 23rd February 1800, in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Newth, (nee Jackson) who were married on the 10th January 1791, in Wootton Bassett.

John and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised in Wootton Bassett:

Sarah, 26th January 1794

John, 4th June 1797

Jemima, 19th June 1803

Mark, 20th April 1806

William, 6th December 1807

George. 16th May 1813

Robert Newth, a sojourner in the parish, married Ann Fidler on the 7th November 1825, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, both were single, witnesses were Samuel Purdue and Thomas Edmonds

(Ann was baptised in 1805, in Kintbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Fidler)

The 1841 census records Robert (40) as a Publican, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his wife Ann (30), his mother Elizabeth (65), Ann’s brother-in-law, Benjamin Parfitt (25), Ann’s sister Elizabeth Parfitt (25), Ann’s niece Thurza Farley (15), a Joseph Waite (20), a Jacob Crook (30), an Edward Griffin (50), his wife Harriet Griffin (50) and their children, Thomas Griffin (15), William Griffin (15) Edward Griffin (12) and Charles Griffin (9).

In 1851 Robert (51) was recorded as a Coal Merchant, living at “The Rising Sun”, Wharf Road, Newbury, with Ann (44), his mother Elizabeth (84), Ann’s nieces, Thurza Farley (23), and Ann Pariftt (8) and his niece Sarah Gye (20).

By 1861 Robert (61), Ann (53) and a general servant, were living in Back Lane, Greenham, Berkshire. Robert was again recorded as a Coal Merchant in the census for this year.

The 1871 census records Robert aged 70, as a Barge Owner, living in Greenham Street, Greenham, with Ann (62) and a domestic servant.

Robert died aged 72, on the 15th February 1873, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st February.

The 1881 census records Ann (75), living at 4 New Church Almshouses, Newbury. Also living with her was a widow, Elizabeth Fidler (77).

Ann (85) was still living at 4 New Church Almshouses in 1891. The census for this year records a nurse, Charlotte Eustace (55), living with her.

Ann died aged 87, on the 24th January 1893, she was laid to rest with her husband Robert, on the 27th January.

Probate: NEWTH Robert   Effects under £450       5th April 1873       The Will of Robert Newth late of Newbury in the County of Berks Boat Master who died 15th February 1873 at Newbury was proved at the Principal Registry by Ann Newth of Newbury Widow the Relict the Executrix according to the Tenor
