Mary Langton (1801 – 1880)

Thomas Langton was baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury on 27 February 1801, the son of William and Ann Langton. Thomas married Mary Waites (as recorded in the parish marriage record) on 28 October 1822 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Mary was born 17 June 1800 in Devizes in Wiltshire, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. She was baptized on 7 July 1800 at St Mary the Virgin in Devizes, where the surname was recorded as Wait.

Thomas and Mary had 12 children between 1825 and 1843 who were all baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury. Thomas was originally recorded as a labourer in the baptism records but from 1833 onwards he was a corn porter. More details of the children below.

In the 1841 census Thomas and Mary were recorded living with their daughters Mary Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, Emma, Jane, Louisa and Hannah in Newbury. Thomas was a corn porter.

Then in the 1851 census Thomas and Mary were recorded with their children Mary Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Louisa, Hannah, Thomas and Ellen at Wharf Road in Newbury. Thomas senior was a corn porter and Sarah a dressmaker while the five youngest children were scholars.

Ten years later in the 1861 census Thomas and Mary were living with their children Mary Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, Emma, Jane, Louisa, Hannah, Thomas and Ellen at Back Lane in Newbury. Thomas senior was a corn salesman but none of the children had any occupations. Their daughter Jane had married Joseph Percy in 1857 but was a widow by the time of the census and her son Joseph aged 2 was also living in the house.

By the time of the 1871 census Thomas and Mary were living with their children Mary Ann, Jane, Louisa and Hannah along with Jane’s son Joseph at Kings Arms Yard in Newbury. Thomas was a corn salesman but none of the children had any occupations recorded.

Thomas died on 22 October 1873 aged 72 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 27 October. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 23 October 1873 and also in the Reading Mercury of 25 October 1873. The Reading Mercury announcement is set out below, the Newbury Weekly News one recorded him in error as Henry Langton.

 

LANGTON – on the 22nd inst., at his residence, Corn Wharf, Newbury, Mr. Thomas Langton, corn salesman, aged 73.

 

Thomas left a will and probate was granted on 3 December 1873 at Oxford to his widow Mary and William Knight, a canal agent. The value of the estate was under £3,000.

 

In the following month announcements were placed in the Newbury Weekly News stating that the family of Thomas Langton beg to return their sincere thanks for those who supported the business of Thos Langton corn salesman for the last 48 years and it will now be carried out by his son Thomas Langton.

 

Mary died on 6 October 1880 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 October. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 14 October as below.

 

LANGTON – Oct. 6, at Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Mary, widow of the late Thomas Langton, aged 79.

Elizabeth – baptized 1830, married Arthur Stillman, buried at Newtown Road on 27 July 1904

Emma – baptized 1833, married Frederick Kimber, buried at Newtown Road on 11 January 1922

Martha – baptized 1834, died aged 10 weeks & buried St Nicolas on 15 July 1834.

Jane – baptized 1835, married Joseph Percy, buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 16 July 1913

Louisa – baptized 1837, did not marry, died 18 March 1926 & buried Henley Cemetery

Hannah – baptized 1838 – twin, did not marry, died 27 February 1927 & buried Henley Cemetery

Amelia – baptized 1838 – twin, buried 2 November 1838 at St Nicolas aged 4 months

Thomas – baptized 1839, buried on 25 October 1839 at St Nicolas aged 6 weeks.

Thomas – baptized 1841, took over the family business, buried at Newtown Road on 6 June 1903

Ellen – baptized 1843, married Charles Staniford, died January 1933, buried Burghfield
