Arthur Dudley Percy (1897 – 1902)
Emily Florence Carter was born in 1878 in East Woodhay, the daughter of William and Alice, nee Smith, Carter. She was baptized on 20 August 1878 at St Thomas in Woolton Hill. Emily was recorded with her parents and siblings living in East Woodhay in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Her father William was a shoemaker and Emily was a domestic servant in 1891.
Emily had a son Arthur Dudley Carter who was born in East Woodhay in 1897. In the following year 1898 Emily married Harold John Percy in Newbury district, Harold was born on 12 July 1875 in Newbury.
In the 1901 census Emily and Harold were living in Chatham in Kent along with their daughter Lilian aged one. Harold was a life insurance agent. Emily’s son was living with her parents in East Woodhay and recorded as Dudley Carter.
Arthur Dudley died on 28 November 1902 aged 5 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 December after a service at St Nicolas. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 4 December as below.
PERCY – Nov. 28, at, 57 Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Arthur Dudley, the dearly loved son of Harold and Emily Percy, aged 5 ½ years.
Harold and Emily along with their daughter Lilian emigrated to Canada arriving in Montreal on 24 July 1904. They were living in London City in Ontario in 1911. Harold died on 7 January 1945 in Toronto and he was buried at Park Lawn Cemetery. Emily probably died in Toronto in 1974.
Harold’s parents were both buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, his father George Peover on 13 May 1899 and his mother Harriet Mary on 9 September 1903.
