Tabitha Parrott
1798-1870
Tabitha, her parents, siblings and early life:
Tabitha was born on the 5th April 1798, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 14th August 1798, the daughter of Francis and Mary Maskell (nee Beale) who were married on the 9th August 1791, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. (Mary was recorded as Molly at the time of their marriage)
Tabitha’s father Francis Mascall was baptised on the 20th April 1760, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of William and Mary. He died aged 71 in 1830 and was buried in the Baptist Buial Ground, Newbury, on the 15th October.
Her mother Mary (recorded as Polly, primarily as a diminutive of Mary,) was baptised on the 7th June 1768, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of James and Mary Beal, (nee Staples) who were married on the 29th October 1758, at St Nicolas, Newbury (surname recorded as Beale). Mary died aged 55 in 1824. She was buried (as Molly) in the Baptist Burial Ground, Newbury, on the 8th December.
Francis and Mary also had the following children (all children baptised at Northcroft Lane Baptist Church, Newbury):
William, born 21st May 1792, in Amersham Bucks, baptisted 5th September 1793
Sophia, born 18th January 1795, in Newbury, baptised 13th February 1795
Ann, born 29th July 1803, in Newbury baptised 9th September 1805
Martha, born 6th April 1808, in Newbury, baptised 7th November 1808
Henry, born 3rd February 1811, in Newbury baptised 25th October 1812
The 1815 census of Newbury records Francis (50), as a Tanner, living in Lewis’s Yard, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Mary (46), Tabitha (16), Ann (13), Martha (7) and Henry (4). (Surname mistakenly recorded as Mashall)
Tabitha in later life:
Tabitha married Thomas Parrott on the 21st February 1821, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire. Both were single, witnesses were Elizabeth Beale and Robert Doonan.
(Thomas Parrott was born c1785, in London/Middlesex, possible baptism, Thomas Peter, born 26th December 1794, baptised 25th January 1785, at St Sepulchre, Holborn, the son of Alexander Perer and Mary Parrott)
Thomas and Tabitha had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:
Jane, 10th April 1822
Tabitha, 26th December 1823
Ellen, 5th August 1827 (died in 1831, in Newbury)
The 1841 census records Thomas (50), as a Shoemaker, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Tabitha (40) and their daughters, Jane (12) and Tabitha (15).
The 1851 census records Tabitha (56) and Thomas (66), a Cordwainer, lodging with their married daughter Jane Legg (28) and their son-in-law, James Legg (22), a Cordwainer, in Middleton Buildings, Newbury.
The 1861 census records Tabitha (64) as a Bootbinder, living at 8 Roan Street, Greenwich.
Tabitha died in 1870, in Newbury (age at death recorded as 70), she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th July.
