William’s early family life:

William Ernest was born in Hackney, London, the son of Joseph and Ann Maria Rhodes (nee Lawson) who were married on the 13th October 1877, in Walthamstow, Essex.

His father Joseph was born in 1855 in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, the son of Joseph and Maria Rhodes (nee Parsons) who were married in 1854, in Cambridgeshire.

His mother Ann Maria was born in 1858, in East Walton, Norfolk, the daughter of James and Maria Lawson (nee Jackson) who were married on the 9th November 1841, in East Walton, Norfolk.

The 1881 census records William (1), living at 91 Blurton Road, Hackney, with his father Joseph (25), a Railway Signalman and his mother Ann (22).

William’s mother died aged 23, in 1882, in Hackney.

His father remarried on the 12th August 1886, at St Peter, Radford, Nottingham. His 2nd wife was Millicent Amy Bowley. They had a son, Joseph Amos, born c1894, in Nottingham.

The 1891 census records William (11), living at 14 Bulwer Road, Radford, Nottingham, with his father Joseph (34), a Police Constable and his step-mother Millicent (31)

William in later life:

The 1901 census records William (21), as a Tea Merchant’s Assistant, boarding at 9 Kingswood Terrace, Fulham.

William married in 1906

Groom: William Ernest Rhodes, aged 26, bachelor, occupation, Commercial Traveler, abode, 54 Bovington Road, Fulham

Bride: Isabella Louisa Barrett, aged 26, spinster, abode, 54 Bovington Road, Fulham

Fathers: Joseph Rhodes, a Police Constable and Henry James Barrett, an Ostler

Witnesses: Joseph Rhodes, Amy Rhodes, Alex Barrett and Frank Howes Leader

William and Isabella had the following two children, born in Fulham:

In 1911 William (31) was working as Chauffeur, living at 11 Masons Arms Yard, Maddox Street, London, with Isabella (31), Ellen Annie (1) and his widowed father-in-law, Henry James Barrett (63)

William was widowed in 1914. Isabella died aged 34, in Fulham.

William remarried in 1916, in Lewisham, his 2nd wife was Mary Cottrell.

The 1921 census records Wiliam (41), living at 9 Porchester Road, Newbury, with Mary (28), Ellen Annie (11), Cecil Ernest (9), and a visitor, Rose Cottrell (18). William was working as a self-employed Dealer in Cast Off Clothing, at the Queens’ Hotel Yard, Newbury.

William Ernest died aged 53, on the 22nd April 1933, at Blagrave Hospital, Calcot, Reading, Berkshire. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th April.
