Ellen Charles
c1831-1915
Ellen was baptised on the 13th March 1831, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Allen.
Ellen’s mother Elizabeth was born on the 7th July 1809. She was baptised on the 13th August 1809 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of Antrim and Sarah Allen (nee Hazel) who were married on the 11th March 1806, in Thatcham.
Elizabeth also had an illegitimate son Charles, born c1838, in Greenham, Berkshire.
Elizabeth married James Tidbury on the 8th August 1840, in Burghclere, Hampshire.
(James was a Blacksmith. He was born deaf, on the 30th April 1807, in Greenham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 24th May 1807 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of James and Phebe Tidbury (nee Preston) who were married on the 5th June 1804, in Thatcham).

In 1841 Ellen (10) was recorded living in Crookham Common, Thatcham, Berkshire, with her grandmother Sarah Allen (60), recorded as Independent and her uncle, Mark Allen (25), a Farmer.
Ellen married George Frederick Saunders in 1856, in Kensington, Middlesex
(George Frederick was baptised on the 9th November 1834, in Kensington, Middlesex, the son of William (a Labourer) and Sarah Saunders)
The 1861 census records George (26), a Porter and Ellen (30), living with George’s widowed mother, Sarah Anger, a Laundress, at 8 Market Court, Kensington.
Ellen was widowed in 1878. George Frederick died aged 43, in Kensington.
Ellen remarried in 1879 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Her 2nd husband was a widower, Anthony Daniel Charles.

(Anthony was baptised on the 3rd April 1831, in Osmington Dorset, the illegitimate son of Sarah Charles. He married Susan Spracklin/Spracklen in on the 26th June 1854 in St Martin, Winterborne, Dorset. The had the following children born in Dorset, Sarah Elizabeth Spracklen c1852 (aka Sarah Ann) born before they married, Henry, 1854, Frederick Aldolphus, 1857, John William, 1860, Anthony Daniel, 1863, Robert George, 1866, Walter James Champ, 1870, and Edward c1874, born in Yorkshire. Anthony was widowed in 1878, Susan died aged 49, death registered in Barnsley, Yorkshire)
The 1881 census records Anthony (50), as an Unemployed Mason, living in St Helen’s Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire, with Ellen (50), Robert (14), James (10) (Walter James), Edward (7), Anthony’s mother Sarah Spracklin (70) and his sister Sarah (42), who was blind.

In 1891 Anthony (60), a Mason, Ellen (60), James (20), a Coal Minor, and Edward (17), were living in Nether Hoyland, Barnsley, Yorkshire.
Anthony and Ellen moved to Newbury sometime between 1891 and 1901. Anthony was the Publican at “The Pigeons” in Cheap Street. The license for this pub was transferred to his nephew John Spracklen in 1899. (John Spracklen was the illegitimate so of Anthony’s half sister Mary Ann Spracklin, born 1851)
By 1901 Anthony (70) and Ellen (70) were back living in Nether Hoyland.
Anthony died aged 75, in 1906, in Barnsley.
The 1911 census records Ellen Charles (80) living at 2 Blue Ball Cottages, Greenham Road, Newbury, with her widowed brother Charles Allen (72).
Ellen died aged 84, in 1915. She was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.
