Frank Horace, his parents and siblings:

Frank was born on the 9th October 1892, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Henry Robert and Lydia Rowell (nee Cox) who were married on the 29th December 1875, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Henry Robert was from Greenham)

Frank’s father Henry Robert, was an only child. He was born in 1853, in Enborne, Berkshire, the son of Frederick (a Printer/ Compositor) and Eliza Rowell (nee Parr) who were married on the 31st July 1852, in Thatcham, Berkshire.

His mother Lydia was born in 1855, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 25th November 1855, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas (a Baker) and Mary Cox (nee Kimber) who were married in 1838, in Speen, Berkshire.

Frank’s siblings were (all born in Newbury):

The 1881 census records Lydia (25), as an Engine Fitter’s wife, living in East Fields, Greenham, Berkshire, with her children, Florence (4) and Maud (2). Henry Robert (28) was recorded as an Engine Fitter, lodging in Lower Wharf, Sutton Wick, Berkshire.

The 1891 census records Henry (38), an Engine Fitter, Lydia (36), Florence (13), Maud (12), Henry (9), Frederick (7), Louise (5) and Walter (3), living in The Folly, Greenham, Berkshire.

In 1901 Henry (47) was recorded as a Steam Engine Fitter, living in The Folly, Greenham, with Lydia (45) and their children, Henry (19), a Printer’s Compositor, Fredrick (17), a Carpenter, Louise (15), a Dressmaker, Walter (13), Frank (8), Dorothy (6) and Leslie (4).

 

Frank in later life:

In 1911 Frank Horace (18), was working as an Engineer’s Apprentice. He was still living at home, (The Folly, Greenham) with his father, Henry Robert (59), an Engine Fitter, his mother Lydia (55) and his siblings, Dorothy Lydia (16), a Stationer’s Assistant and Leslie Reginald (14).

Frank married Lena Keep in 1916 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Lena was born on the 8th November 1891, she was baptised on the 19th January 1892, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of William (a Dyer) and Harriet Keep (nee Wherrell) who were married on the 22nd June 1879, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Frank and Lena had a son, Douglas Wyndard born 23rd May 1921

The 1921 census records Frank Horace (28) as a General Foreman (Marine Engineering) at Plenty & Son Ltd. A Marine Engineers and Iron Founders. His was living at Brooklyn Villa, Priory Road, Newbury, Berkshire, with Lena (29), their son, Douglas Wyndard (0) and a general domestic servant.

Frank Horace died aged 40, on the 24th February 1933, at 3 Priory Road, Newbury. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th February. (Frank has been mistakenly recorded as Francis Horace on the burial register)

The 1939 Register records Lena and Douglas living at 3 Priory Road, Newbury. Douglas was recorded as a Clerk at the Central Office, Western Electricity Co.

Lena died aged 61, on the 8th April 1953. She was laid to rest with her husband Frank, in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th April.
