Charles Robinson
1835-1878
Charles, his parents, siblings and early life:
Charles was born on the 21st June 1835, in Islington, Middlesex. He was baptised on the 27th September 1835, at Union Chapel (Independent) Islington, the son of Henry and Jane Robinson (nee Mann) who were married on the 18th October 1832, in St Pancras, London. (Henry was a widower. 1st wife Christianna Crabb, married 1820, daughter Ellen Christianna, born 1821. He was widowed in 1829)
His father Henry was born c1798 in Farnham, Surrey.
His mother Jane was baptised on the 3rd October 1802, in St Botolph without Bishopsgate, London, the daughter of John (a Baker) and Jane (Jannet) Mann (nee Anderson) who were married on the 6th July 1800, at St Luke, Finsbury, Islington.
Henry and Jane also had the following children:
John Joseph, born 26th July 1833, (baptised 18th October 1833, at Union Chapel (Independent) Islington)
James, born 12th December 1836, (baptised 19th February 1837, at Union Chapel (Independent) Islington)
Jane, born 1838, in Islington
Josiah, born 1840, in Islington
In 1841 Henry (40), Jane (35), Ellen Christianna (20), James (4), Jane (2) and Josiah (1), were recorded living at 6 Retreat, Lewisham, Kent. John (9) and Charles (6) were recorded as pupils at Dail House School, Laleham, Spelthorne, Middlesex.
The 1851 census records Henry (53), a Linen Draper, Jane (48), John (17), Charles (15), both Assistant Linen Drapers, James (14), 3 other male Draper’s Assistants and two House Servants, living at 49 High Street, Kensington, Middlesex.
Charles in later life:
Charles married Martha Wilkinson in 1856 (marriage registered in Watford)
(Martha was born on the 1st October 1835, in St John’s Westminster, she was baptised on the 8th November 1835, the daughter of Isaac and Martha Wilkinson (nee Garland) who were married on the 1st September 1830, at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster)

The 1861 census records Charles (25) as a Linen Draper, living at 28 Peascod Street, Windsor, Berkshire, with Martha (25), Charles W. (3) and a General Servant.
In 1871 Charles (35), a Draper, Martha (35), Charles Walter (13), Ernest William (8), Martha Jane (7), Emma Gertrude (5), James Thomas (3), Alfred Herbert (1) and Arthur Percy (3 months), were living in the High Street, Hungerford, Berkshire.
By July 1877 the family were living in Newbury, Charles having taken over an old established hat manufactory business in Speenhamland. 
The following advertisement appeared in the local papers on the 25th August 1877 and the four weeks in August 1878

Charles died aged 43, on the 17th August 1878, after a short illness. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th August.
Martha after Charles death:
In 1881 Martha (45) was recorded as a Tailor/Outfitter/Clothier/Hatter, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her children, Charles Walter (23), a Hatter, Martha Jane (17), a Tailor’s Shop Assistant, Emma Gertrude (15), James Thomas (13), Alfred Herbert (11), Arthur Percy (9), Florence (8), Jessie Beatrice (4), a visitor, a shopman and a servant.
Kelly’s 1887 Directory records Martha as an Outfitter, at 103 Northbrook Street, Newbury.
In 1891 Martha (55) was recorded as a Housekeeper, at 32 South Street, Broadwater, Sussex. Her two daughters Florence (18) and Jessie (14) were recorded as Draper’s Assistants, living with her as well as nine other Draper’s Assistants, one Mantle Maker, three Dressmakers, a Cook and two Domestic Housemaids.
The 1911 census records Martha (75), living with her married daughter, Martha Jane Perham and her family, at 64 Burdett Ave, Westcliff-on-Sea
Martha died aged 85, in 1921 (death recorded in March quarter in Rochford, Essex)
