Joseph Twitchin
c1828-1869
Joseph was baptised on the 25th July 1828, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Twitchin (nee Street) who were married on the 16th April 1826, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
His father Joseph was a Bargeman. He was baptised on the 13th July 1796, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of Richard and Ann(e) Twitchin (nee Cumner) who were married on the 11th October 1778, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Richard was recorded as a Sojourner)
His mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 8th April 1798, in Compton Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Mary Street.
Joseph and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:
George, 8th April 1827 (died aged 6 months, buried 17th September 1827, at St Nicolas, Newbury)
George, 19th September 1830
Eliza, 17th June 1832
Richard William, 23rd October 1836
Mary Ann, 30th November 1838
Sophia, 10th October 1841
Joseph does not seem to be recorded in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records. (As his father Joseph was a Bargeman and he also does not seem to be recorded in census records, it’s possible that Joseph was away working alongside his father)
The 1841 census records Joseph’s mother Elizabeth Twitchins (40) as a Laundress, living in Hatchet Yard, Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire, with her children, Eliza (9), Richard (4) and Ann (2) (Mary Ann).
The 1851 census records Joseph’s sister Ann Twitchen (12) (Mary Ann) living in Cheap Street, Newbury. The census entry also records “Parents on River in Barge”
Joseph’s father Joseph died aged 54, in 1851, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.
The 1861 census records his mother Elizabeth Twitchin (63) living in Church Almshouses, Newbury.
Elizabeth Twitchen died aged 77, in 1866, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th March.
Joseph Twitchin died in 1869. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th September. (Age at death recorded as 45, on Freebmd and 41 on burial record)
