Maria Twitchen

Maria Kersley was baptised on the 12^th March 1821, in Micheldever, Hapmshire, the daughter of Richard and Caroline Twitchen (nee Kersley) who were married on the 17^th October 1809, in Micheldever. (Witnesses: Thomas Twitchen and Francis Kersley)

Maria’s father Richard Twitchin was baptised on the 22^nd January 1785, in Deane, Hampshire, the son of Richard and Sarah Twitchen (nee Webb) who were married on the 22^nd May 1783, in Overton, Hampshire.

Maria’s mother Caroline was baptised on the 8^th April 1788, in Micheldever, Hampshire, the daughter of George and Mary Kersley (nee Withers) who were married on the 22^nd November 1780, in Micheldever.

Richard and Caroline also had the following children baptised in Micheldever:

Richard Henry, born 12^th March 1810, baptised 15^th December 1812

Caroline, born 19^th August 1811, baptised, on the 15^th December 1812 (with her brother Richard)

Mary Young, 27^th May 1813

William, 25^th August 1814

Sarah, 9^th May 1816

Francis, 28^th November 1817

Anna Webb, 8^th November 1822

Henrietta, 6^th June 1825

Eliza, 6^th February 1827

(Richard was recorded as a Farmer on the baptism records)

The 1841 census records Richard (55) as a Baker. He was living in Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire, with Caroline (50) and their children, Francis (20), Caroline (24), Sarah (21), Maria (16) and Jammima (10) (Jemima). (Surname recorded as Twichen on ancestry)

In 1851, Richard (66) an Annuitant, Caroline (62) and their daughter Maria (30) were recorded living at 3, Frederick’s Cottages, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Twitchen)

The 1861 census records Richard (75) as a Retired Farmer, living in West Street Newbury, with Caroline (74) and their daughter Martha (40) (Maria) (family surname mistakenly recorded as Twischer on ancestry)

Maria’s father died aged 83, on the 30^th August 1868. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th September.

Her mother died aged 82, on the 18^th August 1870. She was laid to rest with Richard, on the 23^rd August.

The 1871 census records Maria Twitchin (50), living with her married sister Jemima Stillman (40), her brother-in-law, George Stillman and their children George and Alice, at 9 Northcroft Lane, Newbury.

In 1881 Maria Twitchen (60), was again recorded living in Northcroft Lane, but was now living with her married niece, Elizabeth Owen, (nee Stillman) (30) and her family.

Maria Twitchen died aged 67, on the 21^st December 1888, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th December.
