Robert was born c1849, in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland, the son of Robert and Ann Waldie (nee Carruthers) who were married on the 18th September 1842, in Langholm, Dumfries, Scotland.

The 1851 census records Robert (1), living in Teviot Square, Hawick, Roxburghshire, with his father Robert (28), a Shoemaker, his mother Ann (33) his brothers Walter (8), John (4), his sister Isabella (6) and his uncle, John Carruthers (26), a Woollen Frame Work Knitter.
In 1861 Robert (39), a Ladies Bootmaker, Ann (44), Isabella (16), a Bootbinder, John (14) and Robert (11) were recorded living at 12 Sand Bed, Hawick

The 1871 census records Robert (21) as a Druggist, lodging in the High Street, Innerleithen, Peeblesshire.
By 1878 Robert was living in Newbury Berkshire. He married in 1880.

In 1881 Robert (31), a Chemist’s Assistant and Mary Ann (23) were living in Bolton Place, Newbury.
The 1891 census records Robert (41), a Chemist’s Assistant, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with Mary Ann (34), Robert (9), Mary (8), Edwin (7), William (4) Archibald (2) and a niece, Florence B Frewin (5)
Robert died aged 46, on the 7th August 1896. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th August.
Mary Ann after her husband’s death:
The 1901 census records Mary (44) as a Boarding Housekeeper, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her children, Mary (18), Edwin (17), Reginald (7) and two boarders.
By 1911 Mary (54) was living on her own means, at 23 Craven Street, Newbury. Her daughter Mary (28) was still living with her. She also had three lodgers.
Soon after the 1911 census was taken, Mary and her children, William, Mary, Archibald and Reginald emigrated to Canada. (Her sons Robert and Edwin having emigrated to Canada previously).
Mary died aged 91 on the 30th August 1947, she was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Greater Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
