Thomas Taplin

1860-1907

Thomas, his parents, siblings and early life:

Thomas was born in 1860 in Chute, Wiltshire, the son of Thomas and Matilda Taplin (nee Paxton) who were married on the 1^st January 1851, in Ecchinswell, Hampshire.

His father Thomas was baptised on the 1^st December 1825, in Worting, Hampshire, the son of John (a Farmer) and Sarah Taplin (nee Tubb) who were married on the 17^th November 1814, at Sherborne St John, Hampshire. (Sarah was a minor and John was from Worting)

His mother Matilda was born on the 3^rd November 1828, in Bicester, Oxfordshire. She was baptised on the 15^th March 1829, in Bicester, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Eliza Paxton (nee Potter) who were married on the 9^th October 1824, in Ambrosden, Oxfordshire. (Both were minors and Thomas was from Bicester)

Thomas and Matilda also had the following children:

The 1861 census records Thomas (36), a Farmer of 1000 acres, employing 18 men and 10 boys, Matilda (32), Emily (5), Thomas (10 months) and Thomas’s brother Frederic (28), a Farmer, farming in Chute, Wiltshire.

In 1871 Thomas (46), Matilda (42), Elsie (19), Frederick (6), Edith (3), a cook, a nurse and a domestic servant were recorded living in Upper Chute, Wiltshire. Thomas was farming 900 acres, employing 12 labourers and 2 shepherds. Thomas (10) was recorded as a pupil at Hill House School, Millbrook, Hampshire

Thomas’s father Thomas died on the 27^th April, in Andover, Hampshire. Probate records record his Personal Estate as £2083 15s

The 1881 census records Matilda (52), a Farmer of 850 acres, employing 12 men and 8 boys, at Manor Farm, Chute, Wiltshire. Her children, Thomas (20), Elsie (29), Emily (25), Amy (19), Edith (13) and a general servant were also recorded living with her.

Thomas in later life:

In 1891 Matilda (62) and her son Thomas (30) were recorded living on their own means, in Gloucester Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

(Isabel (Isabella Cruse) was born in 1861, in Welford, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Sarah Cruce (nee Chivers) who were married in 1846 (marriage registered in Newbury)

Thomas and Isabel had the following two children, Edith Isabelle, born 27^th April 1895 and Donald Leslie, born in c1897.

The 1901 census records, Thomas (40), Isabel (38), their children, Edith Isabelle (5) and Donald Leslie (4) and Matilda (72), living in Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire. Matilda and Thomas were again recorded living on their own means.

Thomas’s mother Matilda died aged 74 on the 26^th January 1903. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th January.

Thomas died aged 46, on the 19^th April 1907. He was laid to rest with his mother Matilda, on the 24^th April.

After her husband’s death Isabel moved to Loughborough, Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire. She died later that year, aged 46.

In 1911 Donald (14) was recorded as a pupil in the British Orphan Asylum, Slough, Buckinghamshire. He was killed in action on the 9^th August 1915, in France, during WW1.

The 1911 census records Edith (15) as a Milliner’s Apprentice living with her uncle and aunt, James and Kate Edith Lamb (nee Cruce) at 10 Curzon Street, Loughborough. (Surnames mistakenly recorded as Sophie (Taplin) and Lanch (Lamb) on ancestry).

Edith married Alfred Ernest Bregazzi on the 18^th February 1915, in Loughborough. She had 3 sons born in Loughborough. She was widowed in 1955 and died in 1980, in Leicestershire.
