Matilda was born on the 3rd November 1828, in Bicester, Oxfordshire. She was baptised on the 15th March 1829, in Bicester, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Eliza Paxton (nee Potter) who were married on the 9th October 1824, in Ambrosden, Oxfordshire. (Both were minors and Thomas was from Bicester)

Thomas and Mary also had the following children:

Charlotte, baptised 17th July 1825, in Ambrosden (dad a Yeoman)

Emily, born c1826

Thomas, baptised 3rd June 1827, in Bicester

Lucy Zilpha, baptised 19th December 1830, in Bicester

William George, born 14th July 1832, baptised 21st July 1833, in Kingsclere (dad a farmer)

The 1841 census records Thomas (35), a Farmer, Mary (35), Charlotte (15), Emily (15), Thomas (14), Matilda (12), Lucy (10) and William (8), living in Sidmonton, Hampshire.

Witnesses: Jonas Paxton, Thomas Paxton, Helen Paxton, William Paxton, Lucy Zilpha Paxton, Fanny Booth and Thomas Taplin

(Thomas was baptised on the 1st December 1825, in Worting, Hampshire, the son of John (a Farmer) and Sarah Taplin (nee Tubb) who were married on the 17th November 1814, at Sherborne St John, Hampshire. (Sarah was a minor and John was from Worting)

Thomas and Matilda had the following children:

Twins: Edith and Lottie 1867 (Lottie died 1867)

 

The 1851 census records Thomas (25), a Farmer of 1700 acres, employing 25 men, living at Fox Grove Farm, Kingsclere with Matilda (22)

The 1861 census records Thomas (36), a Farmer of 1000 acres, employing 18 men and 10 boys, Matilda (32), Emily (5), Thomas (10 months) and Thomas’s brother Frederic (28), a Farmer, farming in Chute, Wiltshire.

In 1871 Thomas (46), Matilda (42), Elsie (19), Frederick (6), Edith (3), a cook, a nurse and a domestic servant were recorded living in Upper Chute, Wiltshire. Thomas was farming 900 acres, employing 12 labourers and 2 shepherds.

Matilda was widowed in 1879, Thomas died on the 27th April, in Andover, Hampshire. Probate records record his Personal Estate as £2083 15s

The 1881 census records Matilda (52), a Farmer of 850 acres, employing 12 men and 8 boys, at Manor Farm, Chute, Wiltshire. Her children, Thomas (20), Elsie (29), Emily (25), Amy (19), Edith (13) and a general servant were also recorded living with her.

In 1891 Matilda (62) and her son Thomas (30) were recorded living on their own means, in Gloucester Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

Thomas married Isabel Cruce in 1893.

The 1901 census records, Matilda (72), Thomas (40), Isabel (38) and their children, Edith Isabelle (5) and Donald Leslie (4), living in Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire. Matilda and Thomas were again recorded living on their own means.

Matilda died aged 74, on the 26th January 1903. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th January.

Her son Thomas died aged 46 on the 19th April 1907. He was laid to rest with Matilda, on the 24th April.
