Charles Seymour

c1822-1915

Charles was baptised on the 21^st April 1822, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the son of William and Hannah Seymour (nee Ballard) who were married on the 28^th December 1821, in Hampstead Norreys/Chieveley Berkshire.

Charles’s father William was baptised in 1802, in Boxford, Berkshire, the son of Philip and Sarah Seymour. (nee Hibbett) who were married in 1797, in Boxford.

His mother Hannah was baptised on the 20^th September 1801, in Leckhampstead/Chieveley, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Charlotte Ballard (nee Brooker) who were married in 1782, in Chieveley.

William and Hannah also had the following children all baptised at St Andrew Boxford:

Hannah was widowed in 1838, William died aged 36, he was buried on the 23^rd February, at St Andrew, Boxford.
Hannah remarried on the 26^th September 1846, at St Andrew, Boxford. Her 2^nd husband was a widower, George Herbert, of Boxford. Hannah died aged 75 in 1877 and was buried on the 1^st June, at St Mary, Great Shefford, Berkshire.

In 1841 Charles was recorded as Chas Seymour (19), a Male Servant, living in the Tithing of Leckhampstead, Chieveley, Berkshire.

In 1851 Charles (28), was working as a Labourer for Farmer John Norris, in Leckhampstead Street, Leckhampstead, Berkshire.

The 1861 census records Charles (37) as an Agricultural Labourer, boarding in Boxford, Berkshire.

(Ann Cox(e) was baptised in 1827, in Shefford, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Rachel Cox(e). She married Henry Chamberlain in 1844, in West Shefford, Berkshire. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1845, baptised Elizabeth Chamberlayne, in 1845 in Great Shefford. Henry died in 1862, in Winterbourne)

The 1871 census records Charles (48) as a Shepherd, living at Castle Farm, Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, with Ann (45) and their children William Charles (6), George (4) and Sarah (11 months).

The 1881 Census records Charles (56) as a Farm Labourer, living in North Heath, Winterbourne, Berkshire, with Ann (53), Sarah (11) and Henry (8).

By 1891 all their children had left home. Charles (68), a Farm Labourer and Ann (65) were still living in North Heath, Winterbourne.

Charles was widowed in 1894, Ann died aged 68, she was buried on the 27^th February, at St James the Less, Winterbourne, Berkshire.

Both the 1901 and 1911 census records Charles as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.

Charles died aged 95, in the Workhouse Infirmary in 1915. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th April.
