Arthur, his parents, siblings and early life:

Arthur was born in the Welford/Wickham area of Berkshire, the son of David and Elizabeth Seymour, (nee Gardiner (also spelt Gardner/Gardener)) who were married in 1841 (marriage registered in Newbury)

His father David was an Agricultural Labourer. He was baptised on the 9th March 1817, in Welford, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Ann Seymour (nee Marshal(l)) who were married on the 2nd January 1804, in Welford. David died aged 46, in 1864 and was buried on the 9th March, at St Gregory, Welford.

Arthur’s mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 5th July 1818, in Baughurst, Hampshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Elizabeth Gardiner (nee Boothman) who were married in Baughurst, in 1809. Elizabeth remarried in 1868. Her 2nd husband was William Wise (a widower, from Boxford). Elizabeth died aged 63, in 1881. She was buried on the 11th November, at St Gregory, Welford.

David and Elizabeth also had the following children:

The 1851 census records David (34), Elizabeth (33) and their children, Arthur (9), (mistakenly recorded as Alfred) Henry (6), George (5) and Elizabeth (2), living in Welford, Berkshire.

The family were again recorded living in Welford in 1861, as follows: David (43), Elizabeth (42), Arthur (19), an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (7), Tom (5) and John (1).

In 1871 Arthur’s mother (now remarried) was recorded living in Westbrook Street, Boxford, with her husband William Wise, a Woodman, his son David (22), his daughter Mary (10) and her son Joseph Seymour (8).

 

Arthur in later life:

Arthur married (as George Arthur) Kezia(h) Wall in 1864 (marriage registered in Wantage)

(Keziah was born in 1840 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 10th October 1841, in Chaddleworth, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Wall (nee Saunders) who were married in 1835, in Chieveley, Berkshire)

The 1871 census records Arthur (29) as an Agricultural Labourer/Carter, living in Wyfield Cottages, Boxford, Berkshire, with Keziah (31).

In 1881 Arthur (39), an Agicultural Labourer and Keziah (41) (recorded as Teziah on ancestry) were recorded living in Shinfield Green, Whitley Wood, Shinfield, Wokingham, Berkshire.

The 1891 census records Arthur (49), a General Labourer and Keziah (51), living in Westfield Barn, in the village of Medmenham, Buckinghamshire.

The 1901 census also records the couple living in Medmenham. Arthur (59), now blind, was recorded as unemployed.

Arthur was widowed in 1908, Keziah died aged 69. (death registered in Henley)

In 1911 Arthur (69) was recorded as an inmate in the Henley Workhouse.

He died aged 77 in 1919, in the Newbury Infirmary and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st January.
