Mary Jane Davis
1885-1973
Mary, her parents, sister and early life:
Mary Jane, born on the 18th January 1885, in Crofton, Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry John and Elizabeth Ellen Allen (nee Martin) who were married in 1884 (marriage registered in Newbury).
Her father Henry John was born in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Mary Allen (nee Ba(t)chelor) who were married in 1855 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Mary Jane’s mother Elizabeth Ellen (aka Ellen) was born on the 27th October 1855 in Crofton, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 25th November 1855, in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the daughter of Daniel and Jane Martin (nee Fribbence) who were married on the 16th December 1837, in Bedwyn Magna, Wiltshire.
Mary’s mother gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Rose Elizabeth Martin in 1879, in Twickenham, Middlesex.
In 1891 Elizabeth (35) and her two daughters Rose (11) and Mary (6) were recorded living in The Folly, Greenham, Berkshire. Her husband Henry (32) was recorded visiting his widowed mother Mary (53), his sister Eliza (25), a Dressmaker and his brother Thomas (22), in Cul de Sac Road, East Molesley, Epsom, Surrey.
In 1901 Elizabeth (43) and her daughter Mary (16), a Dressmaker, were again recorded living in The Folly, Greenham. Mary’s father Henry (42), a Painter, was boarding at Chestnut Villas, Long Ditton, Epsom, Surrey.
The 1911 census records Mary (25), as a Dressmaker, living in The Folly, Stroud Green, Newbury, with her parents Henry (51), a House Painter, and Elizabeth (54).
Mary in later life:
Mary Jane married Herbert Charles Davis in 1912 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Herbert Charles was born on the 1st December 1884, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John White and Agnes Mary Davis (nee Lipscomb), who were married in 1878 (marriage registered in Newbury)
In 1921 Herbert (36), was working as a Coppersmith for Plenty & Son Ltd, Marine Engineers, in Cheap Stret. He was living at 5 Craven Street, Newbury with Mary (36).
The 1939 Register records Mary and Herbert, a Marine Coppersmith, living at 56 Greenham Road, Newbury.
Mary and Herbert continued to live in Greenham Road, Newbury until Herbert’s death. He died aged 75, on the 1st February 1960. Herbert was cremated, his remains were buried in Newtown Road Cemetery with his father-in-law, Henry John Allen (buried 1940) and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Ellen Allen (buried 1944)
Mary died aged 88 on the 2nd April 1873, at St Mary’s Hospital, Wallingford. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th April, with her husband Herbert and her parents, Henry John Allen (buried 1940) and Elizabeth Ellen Allen (buried 1944)
