Ormsby Edward Culyer

1852-1856

Ormsby Edward was born in Kent, the son of John Ormsby and Sarah Culyer (nee Netherclift) who were married on the 25^th February 1847, in Bray, Berkshire

His father John Ormsby was baptised on the 25^th January 1818, at St Lawrence, Norwich, Norfolk, the son of William (a Chair Maker) and Maria Culyer (nee Smith) who were married on the 28^th June 1812, at St Helen, Norwich, Norfolk.                                                                                John was a Civil Engineer. In 1853 John was employed by Messrs. Rickon in Chatham Kent, who were erecting gasworks to supply gas to the parish of Gillingham. On Friday the 2^nd December, works having been completed, the gasometer was filled with gas ready for lighting up the parish on the following (Saturday) night. On the Friday evening it was suspected that there was gas leaking from the gasometer and John and a workman named William Hall, went to investigate, incautiously taking a lit candle with them. When reaching the top of the gasometer, the gas was lit by the flame of the candle causing a massive explosion, killing both men.

John was buried on the 8^th December at St Mary Magdalene Churchyard Gillingham, Kent

His mother Sarah was baptised in 1822, in Winkfield, Berkshire, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Nethercliff/Netherclift (nee Chambers) who were married c1817, in Wokingham, Berkshire.

John and Sarah also had the following two daughters:

Bessie Maria, born 1848 in Wokingham

Kate Anna, born c1850 in Middlesex

In 1851, Sarah (28) and her daughter Bessie (3), were recoded as visitors, at the home of Michael Netherclift (31) a Farmer, in Up Green, Eversley, Hampshire.

By 1851 Ormsby’s grandmother Maria Culyer was living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with her widowed daughter Maria Share, and her children.

Maria died aged 58 in 1853 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th June.

Ormsby Edward died aged 3 in 1856. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road, Cemetery on the 10^th January.

The 1871 census records Sarah (48) as a Domestic Nurse, living in Linden Hall, Bigges Quarter, Northumberland.

The 1881 census records Sarah (58) as a visitor, in Askham Bryan, Yorkshire.

By 1891 Sarah (68) was living on her own means, with her married daughter Bessie Robson (43) and her family, at 11 Chelverton Road, Putney, London.

Sarah died aged 74 in 1897. She was buried on the 6^th March, at St Mary, Putney, London
