George, his parents, siblings and early life:

George was born in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 27th September 1818, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of John (a Carpenter) and Sarah Adams (nee Henwood) who were married on the 8th September 1805, at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire. (Both were from Greenham)

His father John was baptised on either the 5th or 6th October 1775, at St Lawrence, Alton, Hampshire, the son of John and Ann Adams (nee Swain), who were married on the 21st January 1771 at St Lawrence, Alton. (John was from Upton Gray) John died aged 88 in 1863 and was buried on the 18th November at St Mary, Greenham.

His mother Sarah was baptised on the 20th March 1779 in Weston Patrick, Hampshire, the daughter of Robert and Esther Henwood (nee Hall) who were married on the 28th November 1771, in Weston Patrick. Sarah died aged 76 in 1853. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th May.

George’s siblings were (all baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

Ann, born 7th April, baptised 25th April 1811

Mary Ann, born 26th December 1812, baptised 24th January 1813

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (41) as a Carpenter, living on the west side of Mary Hill, Newbury, with Sarah (39), their children, John (9), Hester (6) and Mary Ann (2).

In 1841 John (65), a Carpenter, Sarah (60), Thomas (25), George (20) and Sarah (20), were recorded living in East Field, Newbury, Berkshire.

George in later life:

In 1851 George (32), a Turner, was lodging in Westbrook, Bromham, Wiltshire, with a widow, Ann Hillier (37), her son Eli (9) and her daughter Bertha (7).

George married Ann in 1853

(Ann was baptised on the 20th March 1814, in Bromham, the daughter of John (a Labourer) and Amy Benger (nee Tylee) of Chittoe, who were married on the 20th October 1803 in Bromham (Amy was from the tything of Chittoe). Ann married Wiliam Hillier on the 25th February 1837, in Bromham. They had a son, Eli, born 1842 and a daughter, Bertha Ann, born c1844. Ann was widowed in 1844. William died aged 35 or 36. He was buried on the on the 20th April, in Bromham. At the time of his death, he was living in Westbrook)

Ann gave birth to a son John 11 days (14th February 1853) after she married George. John was baptised on the 4th February 1855, in Bromham.

In 1861 George (42), a Broom Handle Maker, Ann (47) and their son John (3), were recorded living in Pound Bromham, Wiltshire.

The 1871 census records George (52), Ann (57), John (19), a Wood Turner and a boarder, living in Crowfield/Cornfield, Newtown, Thatcham

In 1881 George (62), a Wood Turner and Ann (66) were recorded living in Broad Street, Thatcham.

By 1891 George was a widow. The census for this year again records George (72) as a Wood Turner. He was lodging in Crown Street, Thatcham, Berkshire, with a Charles Randall (33), a House Painter and his family.

George died aged 80 in the Newbury Workhouse, on the 3rd May 1898. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th May,
