Winifred Grace was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of James Walter and Florence Ellen Crook (nee Mills) who were married in 1900 (marriage registered in Newbury). Winifred died age 6 weeks on the 8th February. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th February 1913.

Winifred’s family:

Her father James Walter (aka Walter) was born on the 15th July 1880 in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the son of Joshua and Mary Ann Crook (nee Wigmore) who were married in 1880 (marriage registered in Bradfield)

Her mother Florence Ellen was born c1882 in Cold Ash, Berkshire, the daughter of Josiah and Ellen Mills (nee Adnums) who were married in 1874 (marriage registered in Newbury)

James Walter and Florence Ellen also had the following children:

Albert Edward, c1901 in Donnington, Berkshire

Ivy Mary, c1903 in Basingstoke, Hampshire

Walter James, c1905 in Basingstoke, Hampshire

Sidney Francis, c1907 in Hawley, Hampshire

Florence May, 1908 in Hampshire (possibly Hawley)

Josiah, 1917 in Newbury (died 1917)

The 1901 census records James (22,) a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Florence (20) and Albert E. (2 months), living in Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire.

In 1911 Walter (30), was recorded as a General Labourer, living in The Cottages, Backway, Speenhamland, with Florence (30), Albert (10), Ivy (8), Walter (6), Sidney (3) and Florence (1).

By 1921 James and Florence were living separately. The census for this year records James working as a Corn Porter, for C. Midwinter and son, at Cheap Street, Newbury. He was living alone at 34 Jubilee Road, Newbury. Florence was working as a Caretaker/Home Duties at the Smallpox Hospital in Enborne Road, Newbury and was also living there with her children, Albert (20), a Soldier, Walter (16), a Draper’s Shop Porter, Sidney (14) and a lodger, Charles G. G. G, Stratford (36) a General Labourer, who was born in Midlothian Edinburgh.

James Walter remarried in 1922, in Newbury, his 2nd wife was Elizabeth Jane (aka Jane) Mercer, who was sixteen years younger that James. They had a son, Leslie Walter, born on the 28th February 1922, in Newbury.

Florence Ellen remarried in 1923, in Newbury. Her 2nd husband was her lodger, Charles G. G. Stratford.                                                                                                                                       Florence died aged 44 in 1926. (Death registered in Wallingford)

The 1939 Register records Walter J. a General Labourer, living in Westview, Newbury, with Jane, and their son Leslie, an Electrician Improver.

James Walter died aged 94 in 1974 (death registered in Croydon)
