Mary Ann Candy
1853-1880
Mary Ann, her parents, siblings and early life:
Mary Ann was born on the 10th February 1853, in Amesbury, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 13th March 1853 in Amesbury, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Virtue Rolfe (nee Blake) who were married on the 6th July 1850, in Durnford, Wiltshire.
Mary Ann’s mother Virtue was born in Ditchampton, Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 5th June 1831, in Wilton Wiltshire, the daughter of Richard (a Labourer) and Mary Blake (nee Stacey) who were married on the 15th November 1817, in South Newton, Wiltshire. Virtue died aged 33 in 1861. She was buried on the 26th November, in Amesbury,
Her father William was born c1828 in Wiltshire. He died aged 32, he was buried on the 28th June in 1860 in Amesbury.
William and Virtue also had the following children baptised in Amesbury:

James, born 17th October 1854, baptised 12th November 1854
Albert, born 22nd October 1856, baptised 14th December 1856
The 1861 census records Virtue (34) as a Pauper, living in Amesbury, with her children, Ellen (9), Mary (8), James (6), Albert (4) and her mother Mary Blake (66).
Mary Ann in later life:
In 1871 Mary (18) and her brother Albert (14) were recorded living with their widowed grandmother Mary Blake (78), in Salisbury Street, Amesbury. Al three were recorded as Agricultural Labourers.

(Alfred was born in 1850, in Downton, Wiltshire. He was baptised on the 8th December 1850 in Downton, the son of Charles (a Labourer) and Sarah Candy (nee Miles) who were married on the 22nd June 1843, in Downton).
Mary Ann died aged 27 on the 22nd February 1880. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th February.
Alfred after Mary Ann’s death:
In 1881 Alfred (32) was recorded as a Journeyman Cooper, lodging at 12 Winchcombe Place, Newbury.
On the 13th May 1883, at St Nicolas. Brighton, Sussex, Alfred married Mary Ann Charman. They had a daughter, Florence Jane, born c1885 in Brighton.
In 1891, 1901 and 1911 they were recorded living at 13 Surrey Street, Brighton, Sussex.
Alfred died aged 70, on the 5th February 1921, in Brighton. He was buried in Brighton and Preston Cemetery, East Sussex.
