Emanuel Collins was born in 1838 in Enborne, the son of Edward and Hannah, nee Knapp, Collins. He was baptized on 11 February 1838 at St Mary in Speenhamland, Edward was recorded as a millwright.

Emanuel’s father Edward died in November 1848 and he was buried on 24 November 1848 at St Nicolas in Newbury. In the 1851 census Emanuel was recorded with his widowed mother Hannah and brothers Henry and Alexander living in Old Newtown Road in Newbury, both his brothers were millwrights.

Elizabeth Bulpit was born in 1837 in Enborne, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Bulpit. She was baptized on 16 July 1837 at St Michael in Enborne. In the 1851 census She was living with her parents and brother Alfred in Enborne Gate, Joseph was an agricultural labourer.

Emanuel Collins married Elizabeth Bulpit in 1859 in Newbury. Two years later in the 1861 census Emanuel and Elizabeth were living with her widowed father Joseph and their daughter Elizabeth aged two months in Enborne Gate. Emanuel was a machine maker.

Emanuel and Elizabeth had eleven children, Elizabeth (1861), Lavinia (1862), Edward Emanuel (1864), Joseph Henry (1865), Matilda (1867), Charles (1868), Edwin Ernest (1870), George (1873), William (1875), Francis Edward (1877) and Arthur Alexander (1882).

Sadly, Emanuel and Elizabeth’s son Edward Emanuel died in June 1866 aged just two and he was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 8 June.

Five years later in the 1871 census Emanuel and Elizabeth were living in Quenington in Gloucestershire with six children, Emanuel was a millwright.

The family then moved back to Newbury as in the 1881 census they were living in Pembroke Road in Newbury although it appears Emanuel was now using the name Edward, as he was recorded as such in the census. Edward or Emanuel was a millwright and his son Joseph an apprentice millwright.

Emanuel or Edward died on 23 February 1887 in Salisbury and he was buried on 26 February at Newtown Road Cemetery. He left a will under the name of Emanuel and probate was granted to Elizabeth on 8 October 1887 at Oxford. She was residing at Kew Villa, Enborne Road. The value of the estate was £36 11s 9d.

Just over two years later Joseph Henry, son of Emanuel and Elizabth, died on 19 December 1889. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 December. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 24 December as below.

In the 1891 census Elizabeth was living with her daughter Elizabeth Bulpit along with her husband Edward and daughter Mabel as well as five of her sons in Enborne Road in Newbury. Elizabeth was still living with her daughter Elizabeth and family in the 1901 census at 5 Craven Terrace in Newbury.

Elizabeth died on 17 November 1903 still residing at 5 Craven Terrace. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 November. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 19 November as below.

COLLINS – Nov. 17, at 5, Craven Terrace, Berkeley Road, Newbury, Elizabeth, widow of the late Emmanuel Collins.

Just over a year later Matilda Collins, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth, died on 6 February 1905 at 5 Craven Terrace and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 February.
