Appointed Superintendent of the Night Police to Newbury Borough Police on 12 June 1840.

Previously employed as a Constable at Shinfield, and a Sergeant in the newly formed Reading Borough Police since 1836.

1856 He replaced the retiring gaoler of the Newbury Borough prison and his wife as Matron. They had to live on the premises.

Also took over the administration of the Police Superannuation Fund. For half a guinea extra pay.

1870 December 22nd He was presented with a handsome silver teapot by the inhabitants of Newbury and a Testimonial in acknowledgement of the zealous performance of his duty as a Police Officer over the last thirty years. He was also given a purse containing £10 4s 3d (approx.4 times his weekly wage).

After suffering from ill health for some considerable time he died aged 67 on 25th August 1873.
